Fallout New Vegas Review

Two years ago we fell in love with Fallout 3. It was a marvelously rich experience full of atmosphere and wonder. Now the wasteland is back with Fallout: New Vegas from Obsidian Entertainment. In this new title we’re transplanted to the west in and around what was once Las Vegas before the nuclear war. There is a lot to explore here so we’d better get started. It’s difficult to review this title without comparing it directly with Fallout 3. They have so much in common that playing Fallout New Vegas,…

With Cataclysm, the latest expansion for World of Warcraft, coming to destroy many peoples lives all over again on December 7th, SteelSeries has decided that if you are going to be grinding for 72 hours straight, at least you can do it with the best MMO mouse you can buy. Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood multiplayer interview

Now that PS3 owners have had the pleasure of trying out the Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood multiplayer demo, Ubisoft has taken to showing off the different modes more openly, and discussing their plans going forward.  The main challenge in multiplayer was to find game modes that actually work with the franchise.  To keep in the spirit of the franchise, the players are actually Templars training in the Animus, running through various simulations, which represent the different multiplayer modes. We had a chance to talk with Christophe Grandjean of Ubisoft Montreal about…

Microsoft rebrands XNA Creators Club as App Hub

When Microsoft first launched the XNA toolset, it was aimed at making cross-platform game development easier for independent game designers, and providing a framework to target them towards not only various Windows operating systems, but the Zune and Xbox 360 as well. To target the Xbox 360, one had to pay an annual membership of $99, which made you a part of the community to submit games for sale directly on the console. It’s actually a pretty innovative approach to letting the individual developer a way into console games creation,…

Toshiba Satellite A660 3D laptop review

When a review unit of the Toshiba A660-042 arrived at the studio, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. The A660-042 is Toshiba’s high end Satellite laptop, and comes complete with NVidia’s 3D Vision technology. I had just come off trying Sony’s 3D in the PS3 and remained unimpressed with 3D in the home. So my expectations were set pretty low. I may have been wrong, but I was also surprised at how much more than a ‘3D laptop’ this was…

Minecraft – A First Person Builder

Two weeks ago my sixteen year old son, Reid, was playing with it. Earlier this week Cory Doctorow was writing about it at Boing Boing. What is this thing called “Minecraft”? If you know about it then you’re probably playing it. If not…then…so you don’t feel out of the loop tonight when the people who hang out in the kitchen talking at parties weigh in on this one: here’s a crash course. Minecraft is an online game which uses the visual conventions of a first person shooter for constructive purposes, literally….

Ubisoft crossover fever: Assassins Creed, CSI and Pets to have Facebook components

Do you like console gaming, but somehow find yourself wasting too much time on Facebook, making you fell guilty for not using your beatiful next gen console to its fullest potential? Depending on how you look at it, maybe Ubisoft is going to give you a reason to fire up the console more often, or maybe they’re just going to suck you all the way into the black (and blue – so much blue) pit that is Fb. At a press conference in San Francisco, they’ve announced that they’ll be…

SteelSeries Xai Gaming Mouse Review

I am staring at the box of the SteelSeries Xai. It has been packed up after my review, so we can give it away to one lucky reader. Then I look back at my Microsoft Sidewinder X8 gaming mouse. A mouse that is wireless and fracking glows RED! Yet I am so tempted to deny someone the chance to enjoy the Xai mouse – I want to crack open that package and go back to it right now. I won’t of course, but that feeling shows how much of an…

Valve has announced that “The Sacrifice” DLC for both Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 will be released on October 5th, 2010.  The new DLC further bridges the gap between the two games, and tells the story leading up to the demise of **** (name redacted for spoilers sake).  During the lead up to the release of the DLC, Valve has also started putting “The Sacrifice” comic online, with the first 2 of 4 parts now available. Fan Expo 2010 – Longbow Games Interview

Toronto developer Longbow Games was on hand at Fan Expo demonstrating and selling their new real time strategy game Hegemony: Philip of Macedon.  Developed by a staggeringly small team of about 5 people, the game maps out a huge area around ancient Greece, and includes a smooth zooming engine for navigating between field level battles to overall strategies. Longbow president Jim McNally was kind enough to talk to us in detail not only about Hegemony, but the challenges and opportunities that arise in a small game development house.
