Rock and videogames this weekend

Sure, the Canada Day long weekend is right around the corner, which means patios, barbeques and fireworks for most, but that doesn’t mean the fun starts (or stops) there. There’s a couple of great events coming up over the next few days worth taking note of…

TCAF 2011 – Miguel Sternberg interview

While at TCAF this year, we spent a few minutes talking with Miguel Sternberg of Spooky Squid about the latest Torontron arcade cabinet, the High Roller. Also on hand was a playable version of his latest game They Bleed Pixels, a “fast paced, gothic, low-fi pixel art, platforming beat’em up” that will be coming out ‘soon’ on Xbox Live Indies.

At the TIFF Lightbox with the Hand Eye Society

The Hand Eye Society held the Arcadian Renaissance a while back TIFF Bell Lightbox.  On hand was a bank of arcade cabinets loaded with a number of great indie games, no quarters required .  The main event of the evening was an exciting, big-screen NIDHOGG tournament. Every time I see or play NIDHOGG,  I just wish I had it at home.  It’s a 150 proof distillation of 1 on 1 competitive gaming.  rgbFilter.com was on scene…

The Start Show – Benjamin Rivers interview

With the Hand Eye Society’s Arcadian Renaissance happening tonight as part of Nuit Blanche, we figured it would be appropriate to post this interview with The Start Show co-organizer Benjamin Rivers.  When we first interviewed him, it was at Fan Expo as a comics creator.  We actually had no idea about his involvement with Hand Eye at the time.  Well, we know better now. The Start Show, which I hope becomes an annual event at the very least, showcased a number of great indie titles, including N+, Dyad and Spooky Squids’s…

The Hand Eye Society meets for the 9th time

The 9th iteration of the Hand Eye Social is only a couple of days away, and if you haven’t been to one, I’d highly recommend it.  The socials bring together the Toronto indie gaming scene and are always a blast, whether inside the venue itself, or outside taking a breather and talking with others (it CAN get noisy inside – people are gaming after all). All the details are below, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that you really should visit iteration games now, and check out…

The Hand Eye Society wants your game on a cabinet

With the success of TOJam, and of the Hand Eye Society’s Torontron arcade cabinet chalk full of indie games from local developers, it’s only a small surprise that they’re making more cabinets, and they’ve put out a call for more games to fill them up.  More specifically, there will be 3 cabinets with different control schemes, and they want to highlight some of the best of the Toronto indie scene in high traffic areas like the TIFF Bell Lightbox and the offices of the OMDC. The cabinets in question will…
