Telus Android news round-up

Over the past week there has been some interesting Android news from Telus, and we’ve collected it all in one place, just for you. HTC Desire Android 2.2 (Froyo) update available now Telus has announced that the 2.2 Froyo update for the HTC Desire is being pushed out today through an OTA (over the air) update.  This is after a couple of false starts last week, when the update was released as a download online, then quickly pulled. Even without the update, the Desire is already in our opinion one…

LG Windows Phone 7 – Optimus 7 and Quantum Hands On Video

At a recent LG event, we got some hands on time with LG’s two Windows Phone 7 devices headed towards the Canadian market, the LG Optimus 7 slate style phone on Telus, and the LG Optimus Quantum QWERTY slider on Bell. Both phones sport 16GB of RAM and 1GHz processors, with the real differentiator between the two being the choice of keyboard or not.  The Optimus 7 has a 3.8″ screen, while the keyboard packing Optimus Quantum has a slightly smaller 3.5″ screen. During our demonstration, Frank Lee of LG…

Windows Phone 7 in Canada: What We Know So Far

Today marked the big reveal of Microsoft’s reboot of it’s mobile strategy with Windows Phone 7. At 9.30 AM EST Microsoft finally pulled the covers off for the world to see the initial phones that will be available at launch (November 8th in North America), though much of the OS has already been shown in great detail prior to today. My first reaction was that the handset selection is a little slim, and there is not much innovation beyond the base ‘chassis 1’ specifications. However this is a launch of…

Telus launching Samsung Galaxy Apollo

There’s no shortage of Android devices pouring out the Samsung factories these days, with the latest to land on Canadian shores being the Galaxy Apollo, courtesy of Telus.  Unlike other Samsung Galaxy models, the Apollo is targeting those looking for something a little more compact in an Android phone.  With a slightly smaller screen (and lower resolution of 400 x 240 as opposed to 800 x 480), this is definitely for people looking for something easier to slip into their front pocket.

Telus LG Shine Plus – sneak peak video

A little while back, we got a chance to take a look at the Telus version of the LG Shine Plus, aka the LG Ally in the US.  This model of the Shine Plus is unique to Telus, and can now be found on their website.   The new smartphone sports a landscape slide out QWERTY keyboard, and a largely brushed metal body.  Though the processor may be a little underpowered compared to its 1 GHz competitors, the Shine Plus runs Android 2.1 very smoothly, and Telus is talking with LG…

Telus and Bell also releasing the Torch on the 24th

Telus and Bell have joined the Blackberry Torch party and also announced that they will be releasing the Blackberry 9800 Torch on September 24th. No official price has been announced by Telus, and Bell has said it will be $199 on a 3-year contract.  I think it’s safe to predict the Telus price to be the same. The 24th is a big day for Canadian RIM fans.  However, it remains to be seen if RIM and the carriers can generate the same level of excitement for the Torch as the…

Canadian telcos to share high speed networks with 3rd party providers

Back in 2008, the CRTC ruled that internet wholesalers should have fair access to higher speed data networks controlled by incumbents such as Bell and Telus.   Partly due to growth in high speed cable internet, the incumbent telcos haves have been resisting providing the high speed access to 3rd party wholesalers, to maintain a competitive edge with their cable counterparts.  The original 2008 ruling was challenged and sent to federal cabinet, which sent it back to the CRTC. On Monday, the CRTC reaffirmed its position, which with means independents will…

iPhone 4 Toronto launch report with video and pictures

RGB Filter was at the Toronto launch of the iPhone 4 on Friday, July 30th. However not being a die-hard Apple fanatic I wasn’t lining up for the phone myself, so I slept in and missed the 7 AM early opening at the Apple Store. When I got to the Eaton Centre, at about 7.30 AM, there was a short line outside the Bell store, waiting for that store’s 10 AM opening, a pretty long line outside Fido, and a few people outside the Rogers store. Most amusing to me…

iPhone 4 Canadian launch news round-up

The day has finally come for Canadian iPhone fans, as the iPhone 4 is available in Canada. Are you picking one up today? After all the controversy surrounding ‘Antennagate‘ in the US, it will be interesting to see if the problems with iPhone 4 will affect sales in Canada. The die-hard Apple fanatics will still be lining up in front of stores to get their Precious, but with a lot more choices available in Canada for high-end smartphones now (the Samsung Galaxy S comes to mind), I can’t help but…

Rogers launches Chatr, Mobilicity pursuing legal action

Rogers officially launched their new discount mobile brand Chatr yesterday, after delaying the planned mid-July launch for unspecified reasons. Chatr, like the new Canadian wireless entrants (Mobilicity, Public Mobile and Wind Mobile), is a zone based unlimited cellphone service. The service will be available in in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Vancouver, and will be expanding to Montreal in the fall. Rogers originally announced Chatr on June 30th, as a new brand to cater to customers looking for unlimited plans, with no contracts — the very same market that the…

Samsung Galaxy S coming to Telus too?

UPDATE – According to MobileSyrup, the Telus Galaxy in question is actually going to be the mid-range Galaxy Apollo. Hopes dashed. When Samsung announced the launch in Canada of the Galaxy S ‘Superphone’, on Bell, they also said that “Canadian consumers can anticipate the release of additional Galaxy S smartphones throughout the rest of 2010.” Well, it looks like Telus might be the first carrier to have one of these ‘additional’ Galaxy S phones. On Howard Forums, one of the internet’s best discussion groups for phone geeks, the image above…

Telus officially announces the HTC Desire Android smartphone

Though Canada often seems a step or two behind in getting the latest and greatest smart phones, we’ve recently seen what could be called Superphones (you know, large high-res screens and 1GHz + processors) hitting our shores. Rogers is already carrying the X10 Bell has announced the Galaxy S.  Beyond Android, the iPhone 4 will clearly be in this category when released in Canada.  [ED Note: I’d put the Acer Liquid E in there as well, given its specs]. The latest announcement, from Telus, is that the HTC Desire will…
