Nokia, which has long held the crown as ‘best camera on a phone’ with their 12 megapixel N8 today upped the ante with the announcement of their PureView 808 phone. The phone will ship with a custom 1/1.2″ sensor, much larger than most smartphone cameras. While this leads to a noticable hump on the back, the results make up for it, as it sports a 41 megapixel sensor, enabling it to capture images up to 38 megapixels in size.

Best Buy Canada’s Free Phone Fridays returns with some killer deals – if you sign a new 3yr contact. This week’s deals include the Nexus S, ATRIX & Xperia PLAY for $0. With the announcement that the mobile version Minecraft is coming exclusively (at first) to the PLAY perhaps it’s time to consider getting a 2nd phone? Also if you are on the fence about the PLAY we should have some videos posted later today of it in action – it is, IMO, hands-down the best mobile gaming experience you …

Best Buy Canada has followed the Best Buy US lead and is offering a selection of ‘free’ phones every Friday. Of course there is a catch – they are only free if you buy the phone on a 3-year term, as a new activation. While this means that not everybody can take advantage of these deals, if you are no longer in a contract or looking to switch carriers, you can pick up one of the latest Android phones by just signing a piece of paper!
The phones included (and carriers) …

While there is some controversy to the use of 4G as a label for current 3.5g networks, the Telus Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate 4G (what a mouthful!) when it launches tomorrow will certainly be the ‘fastest’ phone in Canada. With 21 Mbps HSPA+ download speeds, this minor revision to the super popular Galaxy S series of phones sports the same 4″ Super-AMOLED screen, 1Ghz processor, 5MP camera, and still runs only Android 2.2. This is a little disappointing, since Gingerbread (Android 2.3) has been available for quite some time now. Samsung has however …

On April 7th Motorola announced that the XOOM Android 3.0 tablet was available in Canada. Future Shop had jumped the gun a bit and started selling them the day before so instead of waiting for a review unit to be sent, I rushed out to buy it right away. I had hoped that I would be able to get some hands-on videos posted soon after. Sadly, due to Real Life™ this was not to be.

Already available on T-Mobile in the US since November 2010, Motorola has decided to bring the rugged DEFY to Canada. This mid-range Android smartphone stands out from the competition in one major way – its durability. It has a scratch proof Gorilla Glass screen, is water-resistant, dust-proof, and can take a few more drops than your average smartphone. However keep in mind water-resistant doesn’t mean water-proof, so I wouldn’t suggest trying to duplicate the conditions of the image above!
While the DEFY is certainly not a cutting edge Android phone, it …

Motorola announced today that the XOOM tablet, running Android 3.0 Honeycomb, will be coming to Telus in April. There’s no official date at this time, but Futureshop’s website suggests that it should arrive mid-April. Although there are both 3G and WiFi only variants of the 10.1″ tablet, Telus will initially only be offering the WiFi model, which they’re recommending be paired with one of their mobile hotspot ‘Flex Plans’ to give users on the go connectivity. It will be available at Telus stores and other electronic retailers with no contract starting at $599.99.

This weekend marks the Great Canadian Appathon, a competition to code a mobile game from scratch to completion in 48 hours. XMG Studio and The National Post are sponsoring the mobile game coding marathon, which starts at 5pm on Friday March 11th. The competition is open to university and college students, working either solo or in teams of up to four people, with the goal to make the best Windows Phone 7 game possible from scratch.
Teams will meet up at one of six different locations across the country to start the marathon coding sessions, which …

Last week, Telus announced the arrival of its Dual Cell network, which could bring theoretical speeds of up to 42Mbps to their network, which doubles the HSPA+ technology being used today. The usage of the term 4G elsewhere has been met with some confusion, but with it getting wide use in the US for competing technologies, it’s not surprising that we’re seeing it happen here in Canada as well.
To get some clarification on the use of 4G, and what plans they have for LTE, we fired off some questions to Telus, and present the response below…

With the Holidays just around the corner the release of new phones is almost a daily occurrence. Only two days after the big Windows Phone 7 launch Telus is adding another Android phone to their already impressive line-up of little green robots – the Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate 3G+. The Telus Fascinate (not to be confused with the US only Verizon Fascinate that is slightly different) is basically the same phone as the Bell Galaxy S Vibrant that we looked at a few months ago here, the only change being …

Though the title seems damning, it isn’t a judgement on the OS itself, but of the seeming lack of availability of Windows Phone 7 handsets on it’s North American launch day. Last week we reported Telus being the first to pull the trigger on pricing for Windows Phone 7 devices, and with launch day coming to a close, it appears they’re the carrier that made the biggest deal of the launch.he first 100 people to the Telus store in Toronto’s Eaton Centre also got a free Xbox 360 Slim 4GB …

Usually Telus likes to play their cards close to their chest, so I was a little surprised that Telus was the first Canadian carrier to officially announce pricing for Windows Phone 7 handsets. The North American launch is next Monday, and in the US the price for all the models is going to be $199 on a 2-year term.
Since Canadians have long been used to getting the short end of the stick, I assumed that the Canadian price would be the same, just on a 3-year term. While we …
