Telus bringing Motorola XOOM to Canada

Motorola announced today that the XOOM tablet, running Android 3.0 Honeycomb, will be coming to Telus in April. There’s no official date at this time, however, the Best Buy preorder page states that it should arrive at their warehouse mid-April. Although there are both 3G and WiFi only variants of the 10.1″ tablet, Telus will initially only be offering the WiFi model, which they’re recommending be paired with one of their mobile hotspot ‘Flex Plans’ to give users on the go connectivity. It will be available at Telus stores and other electronic retailers with no contract at $599.99 for the 32GB model.

“Motorola is focused on delivering game-changing, innovative technologies that delight users and enhance their mobile computing experiences,” said Jeff Miller, corporate vice president, Motorola Mobility. “The MOTOROLA XOOM Wi-Fi packs the power of a laptop in a tablet, the first tablet to run Google Android 3.0 for unparalleled multi-tasking, HD entertainment, and Adobe Flash PC-like web browsing”.

We had a chance to get some hands on time with the XOOM, and it’s a fairly impressive device. Despite the large 10.1″ 1280 x 800 screen the weight was more than acceptable. Using Honeycomb was much less the oversized phone experience that the Galaxy Tab and iPad provide, and more of a scaled down desktop.  Powered by the dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 chip, running at 1GHz, the XOOM is able to handle graphic intensive programs very easily.  The tablet also sports a rear 5 Mpixel camera with flash as well as a front 2 Mpixel shooter for video chat.  It would be an understatement to say that Honeycomb specific apps are few and far between in the Android Market at the moment.  With Honeycomb being the successor to Gingerbread, and Nvidia’s push with its Tegra chipset, this should change over the next few months.

Although neither Telus nor Motorola have announced availability of 3G models, it’s probably a safe bet that when they do come to Canada, XOOM 3Gs will probably appear on Telus first.
