Fan Expo 2010 – Bedlam Ink

The folks over at Bedlam Ink, who are charged with doing additional storytelling for the new Showcase series Lost Girl were at the Fan Expo booth this year.  This included both a printed comic, which is a standalone story, as well as a motion comic that works as a prequel to the TV series.  Jessie, Navid and Tigh from Bedlam Ink were kind enough to take some time to talk with us about how the comics tie into the series, and some of the process of developing the comics for…

FanExpo Review Round-Up

Obviously with FanExpo, and then TIFF, I haven’t had much time for my usual comics review (though there’s certainly some good stuff on the stack), but at FanExpo I did get plenty of chances to read a whole load of interesting comic books.  Here then, are my thoughts on a few of them. Max Overacts Four strips in, Max Overacts found it’s way into my daily webcomics feed.  It’s the kind of comic that strongly recalls the early days of the webcomic explosion, when everyone was trying to recreate the…

What happens when your bid to take over the world fails, and despite your scaly visage, you’re just not good at being evil?  Get into the pizza business, of course.  That’s the premise to the comic Snakor’s Pizza, about a wannabe super villain who has to turn to a more practical career choice when his dream dies. Fan Expo 2010 – Freelance Blues

Freelance Blues is a new indie comic from the minds of Mike Leone and Ian Daffran.  A comedic take on Lovecraftian horrors mixed with the real horror of moving from job to job, the third issue was launched during Fan Expo this year.  Although the series artist, Vicki Tierney, wasn’t on hand, we sat down and talked with the writers… well, more like stood there while they talked about what Freelance Blues is about, and what else they may have in the works. You can check out the first issue…

Fan Expo 2010 – Camilla d’Errico Interview

One of our first stops at Fan Expo this year was at Camilla d’Errico’s booth.  She has a unique art style that bridges the gap between anime and western style comics work, which she’s using to full effect in her book Tanpopo.  The book uses the text of classic literature, such as Faust, accompanied by her characters. You don’t have to take our word for it though, as you can catch some examples at her website.  As an added bonus, she’s donated some of her work to our Swagbag 2010…

Fan Expo 2010 – Pressure valve

As we briefly touched on in our initial Fan Expo write up, the convention was overcrowded this year, with attendance up by about 10,000 people.  It didn’t help that Expo was moved from the larger south building of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, to the north, which has approximately 20% LESS square footage. The intention of Hobbystar all along was to keep it in the south building.  After all, Fan Expo moved from the north to the south a few years back precisely because of increasing attendance.  This year, however,…
