Telus BlackBerry Storm 2 Review

Introduction The enormous success of the iPhone, since its release in 2007, sent a lot of phone competitors back to their drawing boards to create a competitor that included one of the iPhones primary features, a large touch screen. Though none of them would admit to trying to create an iPhone killer, the media quickly dubbed them as such. Research in Motion (RIM), the Canadian creators of the ‘Crackberry’ had already made major in-roads into the consumer smartphone market with their Curve and Pearl entry level phones, but the meteoric…

Wacom Bamboo Fun Pen & Touch Tablet: A re-review

Back in November, Dave was able to satisfy his desire need to be able to multi-touch everything by plunking down $230 on the Wacom Bamboo Fun Pen & Touch tablet. He was kind enough to review it for us, and his reactions were decidedly favourable; so much so that Doug was convinced enough to pull the trigger on one of his own, the diminutive Pen & Touch, which he too spoke highly of. Personally, I’m an Intuos man; my first foray into the Wacom world was on an Intuos 2,…

Bayonetta may just make your head explode

Bayonetta is a new action game in the linear kill everything that’s thrown at you style of the Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden variety.  There’s a lot of similarities especially with the former, given that both were directed by Hideki Kamiya, and from a purely game mechanics perspective, Bayonetta is certainly an evolution. Bayonetta is also a 10 foot tall witch with a sexy English accent, naughty librarian glasses and sassy high heel-machine gun shoes.  Her hair would put Crystal Gayle to shame.  In fact, her skin tight body…

Asus O!Play Air Review

(Editor’s note: With newer firmware available Dave has taken another look at the functionality of the O!Play. You can catch the newness that is the update here…) I’ve been checking out HD media players lately; mainly because I’m not sold on the future of content being in the form of physical media.  Sony’s Blu-Ray may have won the optical media war, but for an increasing number of people – not just us tech nerds like myself – shiny plastic discs are so last decade as digital distribution takes centre stage. …

Telus HTC Hero Review

Since the HTC Hero first launched outside of Canada earlier this year, the company’s take on Google’s Android has been the topic of much discussion. With the Hero, HTC has not only made arguably the first good looking Android phone (depending on your position regarding ‘the chin’, they’ve added their own software UI, known as Sense, on top of the OS. Before that, the only options in Canada were the HTC Magic and HTC Dream. Though solid enough, they lacked that ‘something extra’ one has come to expect with an…

Hello, Dexter Morgan

It’s rare that we discuss TV shows on rgbFilter, at least outside of the podcast, and even then the podcast leans more towards the science fiction.  Dexter is a worthy exception though. Now in it’s 4th season, Showtime’s Dexter follows the trials and tribulations of Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall), a blood splatter expert for the Miami police department, who also happens to be a serial killer.  As a child, his murderous tendencies were noticed by his police officer father, who taught him to channel his primal urges…

Harmony Universal Remote Roundup

Before the Canadian company Intrigue Technologies (makers of the original Harmony remotes) was bought out by Logitech, obliterating the remote clutter in one’s living room or den was largely an exercise in frustration, either dealing with incomplete solutions or spending hours ‘training’ your universal remote to do exactly what you wanted to. If you were one of the few, you actually made the leap to the JP1 forums, which turned certain models of remotes into veritable powerhouses of IR control, after making a custom cable that allowed your Radio Shack…

A look at Ninja Assassin: the title is not redundant.

‘Ninja Assassin’ isn’t trying to change the world.  It’s an over the top bloody ninja movie, capturing the sometimes cheesy feel of 80’s ninja movies, notably the Ninja series starring Sho Kosugi.  To that effect, it works very well.  The film takes every supernatural element applied to ninjas, and treats them as real, to the point where they actually disappear in shadows, and can heal themselves with the power of their own will, to sometimes spectacular effect. Before I go on with the review, I just want to clear something…

Assassin’s Creed II: First Impressions

One of the most anticipated gaming titles of the year was finally released this week… and Assassin’s Creed 2 has a LOT of hype to live up to for some… and a LOT to apologize for to others.  In 2007, the first game was greeted with polarized impressions, best summed up by Zero Punctuations review. Despite its glaring flaws, I was a HUGE fan of the Creed and after grinding through the first level of the sequel, my impressions thus far are nothing short of smitten. I wont get into…

Acer Aspire AS 1410 aka Timeline Review

Ever since the netbook market took off, tech pundits have been asking “What are the defining characteristics of a netbook?”  Is it price, size, storage or some combination thereof?  I can safely say that Aspire AS 1410 (also known as the Acer Timeline in Europe but oddly rebranded here) should not only be considered on the fence between netbooks and ‘thin and light’ machines.  It pretty much IS the fence. With an 11.4″, 1366 x768 display and a full sized keyboard that feels as expansive as the prairies compared to…
