Assassin’s Creed II: First Impressions

2009-11-19-assassinscreedii

One of the most anticipated gaming titles of the year was finally released this week… and Assassin’s Creed 2 has a LOT of hype to live up to for some… and a LOT to apologize for to others.  In 2007, the first game was greeted with polarized impressions, best summed up by Zero Punctuations review.

Despite its glaring flaws, I was a HUGE fan of the Creed and after grinding through the first level of the sequel, my impressions thus far are nothing short of smitten.

I wont get into the back story but I will discuss gameplay and improvements this time around… ***UPDATED***

It has the same overall look and feel of the original title at first glance, but the approach they took with Ezio’s character is DRASTICALLY different then what they gave us with Altaïr! Instead of beginning the game as a full blown assassin, only to have your abilities taken away by the powers that be, only to reaquire said abilities as you progressed through the game etc, Assassin’s Creed 2 starts you out with nothing but your own 2 fists.

As a misfit Italian townie, you begin the game by getting into fistfights, delivering messages and other menial tasks which is obviously how they want you to build Ezio up to into an Assassin. The control’s remain untouched and Ezio does seem to have the same inherent ability to get from point A to B that Altaïr did… However what hasn’t been fixed is the sometimes stickiness that plagued the original (and Infamous). So far im managing without getting too annoyed.

They have also introduced a system of commerce for you to purchase medical supplies, clothing, artwork, maps and eventually weaponry. This is complimented by the fact that you can loot those you beat down and you can pickpocket just about anybody on the screen.  Hey it’s not as satisfying as beating up a hooker with a double ended purple dildo in GTA IV, but its a welcome addition to anybody who was subjected to getting shoved into water by morons in the original.

Has Ubisoft Montreal lived up with the hype? So far, I’d say yup… this opinion could change though if they make me ride a frigging horsie for hours on end!

Thankfully no horsies thus far!

Available for the Xbox 360, PS3 and Windows.

***UPDATE there are in fact horsies but its not a huge part of the overall experience… thank GOD***

  2. BTW, I just looked in the manual… the horsie is there.

  3. I found the first Assassin’s seal in the catacombs tonight. I fell off the top level into the pool 4 times, and twice onto the ground. I fucking hate this sticky ledge control scheme.
