Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini finally released by Rogers

After a few months of rumour and speculation Rogers has officially released the latest model in Sony Ericsson’s new Android smartphone series, the X10 Mini.

The Mini is the little brother of Sony’s Ericsson’s first Android phone, the X10. This phone, while having some great hardware specifications (such as a 1 GHz processor and 4″ display), was hobbled by the decision to release it with the out-dated Android 1.6 operating system. Sadly the X10 Mini follows in its brother’s footsteps, also coming with Android 1.6, running Sony’s custom Timescape UI. However since the X10 Mini is not a flagship phone, but an entry-level smartphone, having 1.6 is not as much of a handicap.

Sony Ericsson claims that the X10 is ‘The World’s Smallest Android Phone’, and while this might at first sound like hyperbole, when you actually see the phone in person you will realize that they aren’t lying, this is one unbelievably small smartphone (it measures 83 x 50 x 16 mm). It also has a unique twist on the X10’s Timescape UI, to deal with the issue of using such a small screen — the four corners of the home-screen can be set as shortcuts to any application on the phone. However one big disadvantage of the screen size is that a full QWERTY onscreen keyboard is not supported, instead you have to rely on T9 text input.

More info, specifications, and a gallery after the break.

The X10 Mini has 2.5″ 240 x 320 pixel screen, 600 MHz processor, 128MB of internal memory, a 4GB microSD card, and a 5.0 MP camera. As you can see, not a very powerful phone — the slow processor might be an issue when running the Timescape UI, and the 128MB of internal storage will greatly limit the number of applications that can be installed. However, seeing as it’s is targeted at the feature-phone market, and priced accordingly, those kind of users are primarily focused on messaging and social networking, something that the X10 Mini should excel in.

We are expecting to receive a review unit soon, so check back for our hands-on impressions.

The X10 mini is available now from Rogers on a 3 year contract for $29.99.
