Samsung Galaxy S coming to Telus too?

UPDATE – According to MobileSyrup, the Telus Galaxy in question is actually going to be the mid-range Galaxy Apollo. Hopes dashed. When Samsung announced the launch in Canada of the Galaxy S ‘Superphone’, on Bell, they also said that “Canadian consumers can anticipate the release of additional Galaxy S smartphones throughout the rest of 2010.” Well, it looks like Telus might be the first carrier to have one of these ‘additional’ Galaxy S phones. On Howard Forums, one of the internet’s best discussion groups for phone geeks, the image above…

Telus officially announces the HTC Desire Android smartphone

Though Canada often seems a step or two behind in getting the latest and greatest smart phones, we’ve recently seen what could be called Superphones (you know, large high-res screens and 1GHz + processors) hitting our shores. Rogers is already carrying the X10 Bell has announced the Galaxy S.  Beyond Android, the iPhone 4 will clearly be in this category when released in Canada.  [ED Note: I’d put the Acer Liquid E in there as well, given its specs]. The latest announcement, from Telus, is that the HTC Desire will…

Bell launching Samsung Galaxy S Android smartphone soon

What is a ‘Superphone’? A smartphone with a large high-resolution screen, fast (1 GHz +) processor & HD video capture? If so, then the Sony Ericsson X10 on Rogers, a phone sadly hobbled by its out-of-date OS, could be considered Canada’s first Superphone. The Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant would be the second. Announced earlier this year, and released in Europe at the beginning of June, the Galaxy S was announced on June 29th to be coming to Canada with Bell. This was surprising news to us, since usually Canadians have…

Motorola BACKFLIP on Telus & QUENCH on Rogers

Unlike a good scotch, phone operating systems  don’t age well, so writing a review for smartphones running Android 1.5 is a tough sell.  This problem is exasperated when said phones are from the same manufacturer, have the same internals, same UI and same overall performance. That’s exactly the predicament in trying to discuss the Android based Backflip on Telus and Quench on Rogers.  You see, I reviewed the Dext from Bell last month, and from a performance standpoint, they’re the same.  The only real difference to an end user is…

Acer Liquid E on Rogers review

Before jumping into a review of the Acer Liquid E, let’s take a really brief look at the history of Acer… Back in the days when more PC users built their own machines, Acer was known for it’s computer component parts, such as motherboards, and branded graphics cards.  Although they branched out into pre-built PCs and laptops over a decade ago, it’s really been the past few years, when they’ve capitalized on the decreasing costs of components, and made a series of acquisitions, that have propelled them into the worldwide…

Virgin Mobile launches their first Android phone, the HTC Legend

In a surprise move, Bell launched the HTC Legend Android smartphone this past Friday, on their Virgin Mobile MVNO. Up until last week it was thought that the flagship Android phone in Bell’s line-up would launch on the main brand. On Friday Best Buy’s website was even updated prematurely, to show to Legend as available on Bell.  Later that day, however, it was Virgin Mobile who was the first carrier in North America to officially announce availability of the Legend.  At an event on Friday, Virgin Group Chairman Sir Richard…

Bell Motorola DEXT review

At the height of the RAZR’s success, Motorola was a force to be reckoned with in the mobile space, but the migration to an increasingly smartphone world has left Motorola behind.  To make make a push back into the phone market, they’ve decided to hitch their wagon to Google’s Android train, with the announcement of the qwerty keyboard packing CLIQ in the US last fall.  To appeal to social networking aficionados, the CLIQ and it’s brethren are adorned with Motorola’s custom UI called MOTOBLUR, which provides a constant feed of…

Next is Now: Rogers branding video

Rogers held their annual shareholders meeting today, and like many of these types of meetings, there’s some slick, well-made corporate video to set the mood.  I’ve been on the editing end of more than one of these, so I know how it works.  The thing is, this one from Rogers, well, kind of works. Using stats projected in urban environments, it communicates the message that the future is here… or “Next is Now” if you will. Some of the stats are somewhat odd though.  I did laugh a bit when…

Motorola finally releases the Telus Milestone Android 2.1 update

While there has been no official anouncement from either Motorola or Telus, a post on the Alldroid.org forums tonight said that the Android 2.1 update was finally released yesterday. At the moment it seems the update must be done with the Motorola software updater tool, found here – there have been no reports of an OTA update yet. Since I own a Milestone I will report on how the update went soon! UPDATE ONE: Success, though since I had a semi-rooted Brazilian ROM running on my phone, the update utility…

Rogers taking pre-orders for the Xperia X10, launches April 15th

A few weeks ago, Rogers announced that pre-orders would ‘soon’ start for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, their flagship Android phone. That ‘soon’ is now, at http://www.rogers.com/x10preorder. New customers who pre-order the X10 with a 3 year contract will get a free Sony MW600 Bluetooth Stereo headset and a chance to win two tickets to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The headset is an especially nice promo, since online reviews of the MW600 have been very good. The X10 is $149.99 with a 3 year contract, which points to the…
