HP buys Palm!

Just in, Hewlett Packard has purchased ailing smart phone maker Palm Inc. for about  $1 billion in cash.  Palm has been up for sale recently. In fanboy circles, yours truly included, the hope was that Taiwanese manufacturer HTC would buy Palm, and do something spectacular with Palm’s webOS.  So much for that dream. HP was always considered a possible suitor for Palm.  This could be a good move for the computer manufacturer, as Dell, their chief rival in the US has recently shown a strong line up of mobility hardware…

Palm ditches ad agency Modernista

Palm has decided they’ve had their fill of ads that either miss the mark with the female demographic, or just plain give a lot of people the willies.   Though I was personally a fan of the initial dreamlike, David Lynch-esque ads with Canadian actress Tamara Hope, most people found them creepy.  This is what Modernista co-founder and executive creative director Gary Koepke, who created the ads, had to say when they launched… “We weren’t trying to creep people out, but one thing I have learned now in this digital…

Palm sales ‘lower than expected’… it wouldn’t be the ads would it?

Well, this doesn’t spell good news for the future of WebOS.  Palm’s ‘re-entry’ into the smart phone market has been less than spectacular.  In fact, even with the launch of the ‘Plus’ versions of their Pre and Pixi devices, Palm still hasn’t managed to pull out of a sales slump. Palm, Inc. (NASDAQ:PALM) today indicated that it expects that revenues for the third quarter of fiscal year 2010 will be in the range of $285 million to $310 million on a GAAP basis and in the range of $300 million…

Smart Phone OS market growth: RIM the winner

Canalys, which is an independent technology analyst group, has released its latest numbers on the global smart phone market, and there’s some interesting stuff in there.  Overall smart phone growth was 4%, with the largest regional growth was 26% in APAC (East Asia, Southeast Asia, Australasia and Oceania), and North America saw a 5% increase, while EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa) actually dropped 6%.  The overall 4% growth is much smaller than the 13% growth last year, and some of this could be attributed to the global economic…

Flash 10.1 Update announced for (almost) everything

As the above video demonstrates, it looks like hardware acceleration for Flash video and websites is finally about to become a reality.  Adobe announced this week that the Flash 10.1 beta will support a number of mobile platforms, including Nvidia’s ION and Tegra chipsets as well as OMAP4 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor. The ION GPU provides advanced graphics for low powered and low cost devices such as netbooks and small form factor PCs like the Acer Aspire Revo and ASRock ION 330.  Both the Tegra and Snapdragon are high powered…

Palm Pre Coming To Bell August 27th

Bell originally announced the Canadian exclusive for Palm’s Pre some months ago, but they’ve finally announced availability…  starting August 27th, you can walk into a Bell Mobility store, or select (and yet to be determined) retail partners.  If you’re willing to commit to 3 years, it’ll cost you $199 + a 500MB/month data plan.  If you can’t commit that long (and we’d totally understand that), you can pay the full retail price of $599. The official announcement says that ‘due to unprecedented demand’ you’ll be able to pre-order it.

Palm Pre to launch on Bell Mobility in Canada

Word came down today that Palm’s last great hope will be coming exclusively to Bell Mobility in Canada. This isn’t really a surprise, given that Bell has always had a better selection of Palm devices than Canada’s other major CDMA carrier Telus. Just like the original announcement of it on Sprint, they’re being very cagey with the release date, saying nothing more than the 2nd half of 2009. When Palm announced the Sprint deal at the beginning of the year, all they stated was that it would be the first…
