Palm Pre Coming To Bell August 27th

Palm Pre In Canada

Bell originally announced the Canadian exclusive for Palm’s Pre some months ago, but they’ve finally announced availability…ย  starting August 27th, you can walk into a Bell Mobility store, or select (and yet to be determined) retail partners.ย  If you’re willing to commit to 3 years, it’ll cost you $199 + a 500MB/month data plan.ย  If you can’t commit that long (and we’d totally understand that), you can pay the full retail price of $599.

The official announcement says that ‘due to unprecedented demand’ you’ll be able to pre-order it.

3 of my guys at work are pre ordering now

cant wait to play with one… not that id ever go back to bell

    1. LOL! PRE order… cheap pun I know.

I’m definitely going to check it out, but I’m really going to wait until early next year, since Bell and Telus are starting their GSM switchover. Not that CDMA hasn’t worked well for me, but with them switching, seems kind of pointless to jump onto another CDMA device when I can eventually get back to the wild world of unlocked GSM phones. ๐Ÿ™‚

    HSPA not GSM!

at least wat the smarmy user comments on engadget are telling me…

    1. HSPA and GSM aren’t mutually exclusive. HSPA is the high speed data network, while GSM is the voice portion. GSM phones will be compatible with the new Bell/Telus network.

dude i know im just repeating whats going on on engadget

“Bell is CDMA, and no they are NOT going to GSM (unlike others PR might say), they are going to TDMA based HSPA, which is not the same as just stright GSM, they will be CDMA+HSPA not GSM.”

im not an egghead help me out here

        1. On the one hand there the reports are saying GSM and HSPA, while others say W-CDMA/HSPA which won’t work with older devices on 2G voice/EDGE/GPRS and will still have SIM free devices, all voice calls being carried on the ‘pure’ 3G network. All of this is transitional for eventual 4G LTE though, which is another story.

It’s worth noting that some people have reported Telus/Bell appearing on their available networks list with Rogers phones, which suggests that there will be compatibility with modern 3G GSM devices.

Doing a little digging suggests that removable SIM cards aren’t a requirement for LTE, but most carriers DO use them. Verizon announced that in their transition from CDMA to LTE, they’ll be using removable simes. So swappable SIMs aren’t 100% guaranteed, but likely, going forward.

I haven’t even looked into which frequencies they’ll be running on…

And all this is dependent on where you read about it. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m just gonna sit back and wait for it all to come out in the mix.

            wait and see i spose

            1. That’s about it. At least it’s not complicated and obtuse. ๐Ÿ˜€

  3. The UnSub price for the PRE is only $599?!??!

Hurm…I’m VERY much looking forward to the HSPA version next year. It’d be more than a little awesome to ave the freedom to pop my SIM out of my iPhone and into a PRE as I felt like it.

The PRE is the only phone I’ve seen so far that could release me from the shackles of my Apple Love, but as much as I hate Rogers, there’s no way in Hell I’m signing a 3-year deal with Bell.
