HTC HD2 review

When the HTC HD2 was released overseas last fall, it quickly gained a lot of fans. They couldn’t help but appreciate the bright, massive screen and the design of the phone itself. This included reviewers generally down on Windows Mobile 6.5. Now that the phone has officially hit North American shores via T-Mobile US, we take a look at it running on Wind Mobile here in Canada. Out Of The Box First impressions are important, and the HD2 absolutely nails it in this department. The design of the phone itself…

Apple sues HTC over 20 patents… war is on?

The news broke this morning that Apple is suing smart phone manufacturer HTC, maker of  many popular Google Android and Windows Mobile devices.  In their 700 plus page ITC filing, Apple lists a whole slew of specific HTC devices running both operating systems, including the Nexus One, HD2, Touch Pro, Hero, Touch Diamond, Touch Pro2, Tilt II, and quite a few more. It’s interesting that Apple is going after HTC as opposed to either Google or Microsoft and their operating systems.  There’s precious little, on first blush, in the patent…

Windows Phone 7 development details surface

Recent interviews, as well as leaked developer docs for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 Series help put together some interesting pieces of the puzzle left in the wake of the Mobile World Congress announcement a few days back. A few of those questions included multitasking, backwards compatibility and partner customizations. It’s clear in the documentation that WP7S will be capable of multitasking, both full background applications and a background notification system. Although the functionality does exist, to what extent can developers make use of it is another matter. Also, as for…

WindowsPhone – what Microsoft needs to do at Mobile World Congress

We rarely delve into outright speculation here at rgbHeadquarters, but over the past month or two, there have been a number of rumours regarding what is going to be a major update to the Windows Mobile platform with version 7, and the rebranding to Windows Phone. With Mobile World Congress starting next week, those rumours have increased, and many have solidified somewhat. What to expect from Microsoft at MWC is largely dependent on what they need to fix, and a little reading of the tea leaves.

XDA Developers officially adds non HTC devices

Unlike many other phone enthusiast sites, XDA Developers, started out as a site for HTC phone owners.  After much speculation, and an initial test with the Samsung Omnia II, the site has finally pulled the trigger and introduced more non HTC phones.  They first added the Omnia II a few weeks back, and have now expanded that list.  I know from personal experience part of the reason I stuck with HTC phones in the past was the unofficial support and development from one of the best phone hardware communities out…

Nexus One Press Conference live stream

Live video by Ustream Google and HTC are officially announcing the Nexus One at this moment.  You can watch the live stream above and it should be archived for the future.  Most of the hardware and software is what the rumours predicted, and there are some half measures to make stock Android function a little more like the Sense UI, though it’s not necessarily enough to make me happy.  At this point, there’s no official word on whether the phone will see a general release, or remain a ‘dev phone’…

Telus HTC Hero Review

Since the HTC Hero first launched outside of Canada earlier this year, the company’s take on Google’s Android has been the topic of much discussion. With the Hero, HTC has not only made arguably the first good looking Android phone (depending on your position regarding ‘the chin’, they’ve added their own software UI, known as Sense, on top of the OS. Before that, the only options in Canada were the HTC Magic and HTC Dream. Though solid enough, they lacked that ‘something extra’ one has come to expect with an…

Nexus One is the HTC Passion, Wind compatible, $530 unlocked, coming in January

Today documents and screenshots leaked out to Gizmodo and Engadget showing some Google pages, and HTC training materials, for the Nexus One Google phone. The HTC documents are also clearly labelled as for the HTC Passion, so these phones are one and the same. The HTC documents show that the Passion is HTC internal name for the Nexus One, but it is not clear whether HTC will sell it as the Passion in other markets outside North America. The leaked Nexus One images and videos showed the phone running ‘stock’…
