Boxee Box gets another update, cements its position as the best HTSTB money can buy.

Much has been said of the Boxee Box, D-link’s fledgling foray into the world of home theatre set-top boxes, running the gamut from “streamlined” and “Polished” (agreed!) to “Disappointing” (…not so much). While it’s true that D-link’s little box has been lacking in some key areas (cough cough MUSIC PLAYER cough), when it comes to ease of use and across-the-board file compatibility, Boxee sits in a class that is simply untouchable by heavy hitters like GoogleTV, Roku, and especially AppleTV. Now, after a scant 6 months, Boxee has widened that…

Unboxing Boxee Box – initial impressions

After what seemed like forever, Boxee Box by D-Link finally hit retail shelves on Wednesday, and being a big fan of the software, I made sure I was there to get one.  I didn’t have the official RGB Filter HD camera on hand, so I fired up my point n shoot with 720p, to give you a look at it, and the much anticipated remote with QWERTY keyboard built into it.  I was going to call this one “A look at what’s inside the Boxee Box box, when unboxed”, but…

Boxee Box confirmed features

As a long time Boxee software user, there’s a reason I’m looking forward to the new Boxee Box built by D-Link and designed by San Francisco design company Astro Studios.  The diminutive media player designed to play internet and local content to your television is more expensive than the cheaper players like the Asus O!Play Air and the WD Live TV HD, but cheaper than a HTPC.  Boxee, with it’s XBMC pedigree, has an unprecedented level of codec support, only bested by a dedicated Windows PC setup, and the user…

Boxee Box pre-order announced for all your pillaging needs

After originally announcing the Boxee Box for a spring release 2010, Boxee had to revise their schedule, promising the diminutive D-Link built media player for a fall release.  The Box allows users to access content both on the local network, as well as access thousands of online sources including network television, Netflix, Youtube and much more (of course, some services are geo-locked).  Despite some skepticism, and some hardware changes, it looks like they’re going to make good on the autumnal release. When first announced, the Box was to be powered…

Boxee Box delayed until November

When the Boxee Box (hardware by D-Link), was announced late last year, they originally planned a launch by Q2 of this year.  Although rumours of a delay have been swirling around for a month or more, it wasn’t until this past Friday that it became official.  The Boxee Box will be launching in November, in both the US and Canada. It’s not surprising, as there have been a number of advances in the past few months in capable hardware and it would make sense for Boxee and D-Link to take…

Boxee Beta now public

As we’ve mentioned before, Boxee threw it’s hat into the settop box ring, and from the looks of what they’ve got on tap, it’s one of the better options. The announced Boxee Box hardware (made by DLink) will have HDMI out, and support 1080p video to your television, using the horsepower of Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chipset, and support a myriad of file formats, networked content and streams from online sources.   The cut off cube look is just begging for a “Weighted Companion Cube” mod,  and is actually small enough that…

Boxee Beta and Box unveiled

I’m a huge fan of Boxee which is, outside of Windows Media Center, my favourite way to access media on my TV.  Boxee, a social networking aware media center, has been in alpha for a long time, and Monday night’s beta announcement marked the next step for the company that wants to be your media portal to the world. With the announcement of the beta program (chock full of screenshots), Boxee has been given a new look along with new functionality.  The menu system appears to have more polish, making…

Boxee Media Center Beta arrives Dec 7

Boxee, the social media connected media center, is having a beta reveal party on December 7, 2009.  The software has been in alpha for the past year or so, and brings a wealth of online content to the living room interface, whether you’re running Windows, Linux, Mac or Apple TV.  From the annoucement: At the event we will demo the new Beta, launch new applications from partners and start a 4-weeks early-access for users to test the Beta before we release it to the public at CES on Jan 7th….

ASRock ION 330 as Media Center

Intel’s low-powered & low cost Atom processor has been all the rage in the computer industry for quite some time now, and nobody has embraced it more than just about every Taiwanese hardware manufacturer whose name starts with an ‘A’. ASUS thrust the netbook form factor into the minds of the masses, but it was Acer who (so far) has won the small form factor war, as the number one netbook maker (the Aspire One grabbing 50% of the market). But it hasn’t stopped there. The Atom is appearing in…
