Boxee Box delayed until November
When the Boxee Box (hardware by D-Link), was announced late last year, they originally planned a launch by Q2 of this year. Although rumours of a delay have been swirling around for a month or more, it wasn’t until this past Friday that it became official. The Boxee Box will be launching in November, in both the US and Canada.
It’s not surprising, as there have been a number of advances in the past few months in capable hardware and it would make sense for Boxee and D-Link to take a look at the options available to them.
Our vision is to make the Boxee experience on a set top box as good as (and where we can, better than) the one you already know on a PC. The goal is to play HD videos from the web or a local network in 1080p and use hardware acceleration whenever possible. And to provide a TV browser experience that can handle almost everything you throw at it, including Flash 10.1. Not to mention making all this happen for an affordable price and on a quiet device that will not feel obsolete 12 months after you buy it. [from the Boxee blog]
Though I can’t help but be a little disappointed, as the Boxee software is a great big screen interface, and the remote/keyboard looks killer, it makes sense for them to assess all their options when it comes to delivering a final product that will age well.
All that being said, you can still sign up and run the Boxee software on the computing platform of your choice right now.
