Left 4 Dead SDK Beta released
In episode 15 we talked a little bit about Valve’s update to the best zombie game ever made, Left 4 Dead. In that episode, which you can see on blip.tv here, we also mention one of the most anticipated user created maps Dead Before Dawn, which is largely based on the Dawn Of The Dead remake.
Unfortunately, that campaign and many others have been waiting for Valve to release it’s authoring tools. Well, that wait is almost over, as the Software Developer Kit has been gone beta, which means that map authors can start converting their creations to work with the native L4D engine.
As an added bonus, the SDK includes a pair of plug ins to make mapping easier by utilizing Sketch Up, a free 3D modelling package (bought by Google back in 2006).
Using the L4D Authoring Tools, you may create your own campaign maps, character skins, 3D models, sound effects, and music and load them into the game.
Here’s what’s included:
* Updated version of Hammer, the source level editor
* Updated suite of command line compiling utilities
* Updated Particle editor
* Updated Faceposer
* Example maps, common infected, props, and explosivesThis release also introduces a pair of plug-ins for SketchUp, a 3D modeling program you may download for free. You may use these plug-ins to create building blocks and props that can be imported into Hammer for use in game levels.
