iPhone 4 announced, coming to Canada ‘in the coming weeks’

Yesterday was Apple’s annual WWDC, where they have announced each new iPhone model since 2008. This year the worst kept secret in recent memory, the iPhone 4, was detailed in Steve Job’s keynote speech, and, unlike previous years, there weren’t that many surprises. Everything lined up with the leaked images and specs, and rather than repeat what most of you have already read, you can go to Apple’s iPhone 4 page here for more details. The keynote was notable, though, for what was not mentioned — the rumoured trackpad we posted about earlier today and a new version of Apple TV come to mind.

With today’s announcement, what is probably on the minds of all Canadian iPhone users is when, and where, can they get their iPhone 4. Apple did say today that Canada would be getting the phone in July, and since all three major Canadian carriers do carry the iPhone, it was only to be expected that they would announce that they would be bringing it to Canada. Bell, Rogers, Fido and Telus will all have the iPhone 4 ‘in the coming weeks’, but none of them have released any more details. The only carrier left out was Virgin Mobile, who only recently started carrying the iPhone, but, as a division of Bell, it would be strange if they did not have the iPhone 4 in July too.

What remains to be seen though is the extent of the offers that the big three will make to their existing iPhone users. In previous years Rogers has been fairly generous in allowing iPhone users to do an early upgrade to the new model, with a reasonable discount, however we are not sure if Telus and Bell will do the same this year. Also last year Rogers offered a limited time 6GB data plan to coincide with the 3GS’s launch. Will it return, and will Bell and Telus match it? With AT&T cutting back their iPhone data plans in the US, and with today’s comments by Rogers, at the Canadian Telecom Summit, about unlimited data, I doubt we will see the return of the 6GB plan.

Check back with us for more details on the iPhone 4’s Canadian launch, when we hear them. You can also sign-up at Rogers, here, for updates too.

UPDATE:  Apple has changed “July” to “Soon”, so we may be looking at an August release…
