Rock Band 3 brings keytar, 80’s cheese to the mix

Green Day fans who downloaded the 2 song demo of Green Day: Rock Band got the first nugget of a hint that keyboards keytars would be coming to Rock Band 3. At the end of the demo, the RB3 image splashed onscreen, that included the four classic instruments as well as an icon for keyboard. The microphone icon was also changed to show three mics, which suggests that Harmonix is going to be bringing, er, harmonics, to the third installment of the rhythm game, though that’s less of surprise since they first introduced it in the Beatles edition.

Better clear out some extra space where you game…

UPDATE: Last night, Ars Techinca got word from a trusted Mole that Rock Band 3 will in fact be throwing keytars into the mix.  From a pure space limitation standpoint, this makes sense.  Also, it sounds as if EA is divorcing itself from the hardware end, allowing major gaming peripheral make Mad Catz to handle all the instruments for RB3.  It looks like they’ll be selling both individual instruments, as well as a variety of bundles for those who need some, but not all, the instruments.

Finally:

This will allow the focus of the launch to be kept on the software, and [ars was] told that there will be a “pro” mode included in the game that will require proper technique, and may lead to actual skills on guitars and bass. How this will work isn’t known, but it’s possible Mad Catz may create a product that more closely mimics an actual guitar.

Expect to hear a lot more at E3 this year.
