Don’t turn on your PS3 for now: UPDATE – fixed

2010-03-01-sadsackThe widespread PS3 errors have been narrowed down, as expected, to a clock-related bug, at least that’s what Sony believes. In short, if you own an older “phat” PS3 (aka not the Slim), Sony is recommending that you do not turn on the console at all untill they announce a fix. So if you were planning on heading home today and firing up Heavy Rain, Bioshock 2, or watch a BluRay, you’re going to have to hold out just a little bit longer.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

  • The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
  • When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
  • When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
    trophies. Please exit your game.”
  • When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
  • Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

UPDATE: Well, it looks like the problem has resolved itself, though it appears that it’s more a matter of just ‘getting past the date’, than an actual fix. Joystiq has some tips on how to recover trophy data.  I imagine there will be a system update pretty soon.

in the past hour the bug has been resolved, if its on sony’s end or the consoles themselves snapped into shape because of a time issue has yet TBD

    1. Sounds more like the clock just ‘ran past the bad date’, since affected consoles wouldn’t be able to access PSN to get an update (and Sony didn’t announce one yet).

As long as it’s game on, it’s all good. I’m guessing there’ll be a patch in the next day or two.

      1. I’m more concerned that someone shot one in Sackboy’s eye 😀
