From Me to Wii

Yes, it’s true I am not the target demographic. However, for the first time in my life I feel like I belong in the big bad world of gaming.

Although it dates me, my introduction to gaming was over 25 years ago. It was Christmas 1982, and I knew something big was about to happen. The camera came out, and everyone gathered around to watch my younger brother and I open our big gifts. I started to tear into the paper, but before I had unwrapped enough to see what I had gotten my brother started screaming. He had gotten a Colecovision, and I, a Cabbage Patch Kid. I was pretty ticked off. Sure I loved “Vicci” with her pink dress, and yarn like hair, but I wanted the games. It didn’t take my parents long to see that there was going to be no stopping me. Every Saturday I woke up, ate my Lucky Charms and then spent the better part of the day in the basement perfecting my craft on games like Lady Bug, Donkey Kong, and even the Smurfs. When I contracted chicken pox later that year I was in heaven-5 whole days of sitting on the couch in my PJs playing away.

I played faithfully for the next couple of years. I saved my allowance to buy all the games I could. Then, there were no new games. It wouldn’t be until 1986 when I received the Sears Christmas wish list, and in its pages I saw the Nintendo NES. The NES was later replaced by the Gameboy, the Turbo Graphics, then my beloved Sega Genesis, and Super NES. Although it seemed to me that I was always somewhat playing to same game. Call me a Girl but the first person shooter games never really appealed to me. I need a cute little character, and a challenging platform. I’d played them all Mario, Bonk, Sonic, and then I grew tired of gaming. At first I thought it was me, but it wasn’t. The game world was closing its doors to me.

I was as excited as you all were when the Playstation was introduced I had a brief fling with Crash, but he didn’t wow me the way I needed. I bought a Dreamcast and hoped that the new sonic would scratch my itch, but I actually ended up hurling the controller across my apartment from pure frustration with him. So I gave up, and ended my love affair with gaming. I was getting on in years, and maybe gaming as well as my dream of being in a rock band should just be put to rest…or should they?

When I first saw the ads for the Wii I was skeptical very skeptical. Then we were hit with the hype, and the wii shortage. I didn’t want to give in, but I did. I spend the better part of two months running in and out of every store I could to find one. And then I did, and I couldn’t be happier about it. I spent the first night playing wii sports for so long that when I woke up my muscles hurt. I was hooked. I’ve played a couple of platforms on it. Animal crossing is a fave of mine, but it’s all the others that really have me. Of course it’s not just the Wii that these games are available for (DDR, Guitar hero, Rock band). It’s just that the Wii is the console for me.

I am somewhat ashamed of the fact that I bought the last Wii fit in stock even when the father of a somewhat chubby 8 year old begged me for it, but hey I’ve paid my dues. I have spent more money in this industry then I would like to admit and for the first time in 25 years I feel like games are being made with me in mind. OK It may not be exactly me, it may just be that the chubby 8 year old and I like the same things minus of course her love of Hanna Montana.

So if the boys around here let me, from time to time I’ll review a couple games for the Wii. Also if you have any questions about the Wii or the existing games for it I’ll do my best to answer those too.

Keep on rocking in the Wii world,
Keri

Best. Comment. Evar. My advice to the father of the chubby 8-year-old would be “Take her to the park.”

It’s true though, you don’t just get your stripes because daddy has the cash. You earn ’em. I learned that lesson with my Sega Master System and the Stereoscopic 3-D glasses. When everyone else was Marioing it up hardcore, I was in the rec room convincing myself that Hang-On was the pinnacle of gaming, and that the combination of the electronic 3D shutter glasses and Missile Defence 3-D was technology that would never ever EVER be defeated. Le sigh 🙂

Welcome to the fold Keri 🙂

  3. I have a question: Is the Wii Fit a gimmick? Or is the Fit game itself, plus the potential for motion sensitive games (SSX Tricky comes to mind), enough to make it a truly viable option?

I don’t think so. I am sure there are a lot of people that wouldn’t be as blown away with the yoga, and areobics as I am. It has it faults, but for someone like me who is not in bad shape, but not in great shape it’s a cute little tool to get you of the couch. I have had a lot of friends over to give it a try, and I have yet to find anyone that doesn’t love the skiing, and snowboarding (not quite SSX tricky, but not bad). The hula hoop is also a big fave. I would love to see more motion sensitive games get introduced, and from what I understand there is a snowboarding game coming. However, you can’t jump on the balance board, so that limits the games that might get introduced. For now, for me…I’m digging it.

    1. I basically feel the same way. I got Wii Fit for the Wyfe and have used it a few times in the month we’ve had it…honestly, while I’m not *too* into the exercise aspect of it, I totally see a future for the balance board. I also see a future of long lines at the Customer Service desk populated by stupid people with fat children who DID jump on the balance board and snapped it in half, but that’s their problem 😛

I played it for about 10 minutes and it charmed the nuggets off of me…

so far the only other killer aps for the PS3 IMO are MGS4 and Uncharted: Drakes Fortune

        Avoid warhawk

        1. Drakes was fun. Tomb Raider, without the bewbs.

I have a feeling that I’ll be spending so much time on Fallout 3 when it gets released that I’ll have little time for anything else.
