Rogers HP Netbook (non) Deal
After annoucing the 50Mbps hi speed internet option in the Toronto area for the low low price of $150 a month, Rogers is now making on the go internet convenient and similarly expensive. For $300 you can get an HP Mini 110 netbook with embedded 3.5G service, with data plans starting at $25/m for 500MB of data, on a 2 year contract. These deals can be found at certain retailers such as Best Buy. Pointing out the lack of major savings compared to buying an unsubsidized netbook, there’s more suitable ways to get connected without having to buy an internet stick at all.
If you’re on a smart phone plan that includes a sizable chunk of data, there are ways to make it work as a modem. Depending on which mobile OS you use (Windows Mobile, iPhone, Android, Blackberry), this can be done through either USB, ad hoc WiFi sharing or Bluetooth, and is a reliable way to get internet access when there are no other options. For no extra cost (outside buying a piece of software in some cases).
The only silver lining to this is that you’d be looking at a 2 year contract instead of the Canadian standard of 3 years. It would be nice to see the 2 year plan idea trickle down to phones as well.

True, but if you don’t want to go that route, a cursory glance at Best Buy’s site says that most (if not all) new Netbooks come bundled with a Rogers stick. All you do it pop your SIM out of your phone and put it in the stick, and boom; U’re online.
I’m not 100% clear on the netbook “deal”…can I buy it at the subbd price if I already have a good data plan?? I get 6gb for $30/mo; basically unlimited. Why the shit would I buy an additional data plan @$25/mo to save $50 off an AGGRESSIVELY MEDIOCRE Atom-powered netbook?

Looking forward to the spin; no one with any sense will buy this product, of course. So this time next year, Rogers will discontinue it, citing “lack of customer interest” and claim that subsidized netbooks are just something Canadians Don;t Want. Just like we DO want caps on our internet service and 500mb for mobile @ $25/mo is totally fair.

^^^btw the rocket stick option would always be my second choice; I’m just saying it’s an easily available, and free, option.
I don’t know if the Rocket Stick can be opened to access the SIM without cracking the case, but you STILL have to subscribe to a data plan if you get one with a netbook or laptop.
If you did more than a cursory glance you’d see it certainly ain’t free. 🙂 The data plan pricing attached to the stick is similar to the embedded 3G on the netbook.
