Sure he can act, but is he The Law?
It’s mainstream news that Karl Urban is going to attempt a reboot of Judge Dredd. This would appear to be cut-and-dry-feel-good kinda story however here are some things to keep in mind.
1. Yes, he is a better actor than Sly but can he scowl? At present a thorough search of the Interweb was unable to find an image of Mr. Urban scowling, sneering or even grimacing.
2. He has gone on record as saying that he will keep the helmet on. Bravo. Now we know he can eyebrow lift with the best. His channelling of Deforest Kelly in the Star Trek reboot was truly amazing but we won’t see any of that on a Mega City standard issue Judge’s helmet. That brings us back to first point and hence the following; Karl! Work on the scowl!
3. See our exclusive, computer assisted simulation of Urban as Dredd above. Points 1 and 2 again. It’s about scowl.
4. Enough time has passed since the Stallone version for the public to have forgotten about that movie (they did about a week after its release) but have they forgotten about Robocop? That movie and it’s sequels and spinoffs effectively killed any chance of the Dredd material looking fresh with a film audience. This might require a really good script that works with the source material rather than the standard Hollywood three-act action picture template.
5. Judge Dredd shares with Moore’s “V for Vendetta” the same two problems. Can a masked character hold a movie audience’s interest for an entire film (there’s no Bruce Wayne/Tony Stark/Pete Parker relief bits here; the man is the mask, period)? Also; does any of the background to the character’s world mean anything to anybody if you don’t know who Margaret Thatcher is?
6. Good luck, Dredd 2.0. You’ll need it.
6.1 And Karl… lose the tie. Seriously.
