Mark Millar talks about the reboot of the Superman reboot

Mark Millar, the creator of the comic Wanted (a dark super villain tale superior to the movie) has been quoted in this IGN news article as being linked to the follow-up to the less than successful Superman Returns. He is quoted as saying that he has always wanted to ‘re-invent Superman for the 21st century’ and that the new movie, with a director to be announced, would be released in 2011. This, according to IGN, is in conflict with Bryan Singer’s announcement that he is going to be working on the sequel, rumored to be called Man of Steel.

Superman Returns was in no means an awful movie, but did pale in comparison to the first two Superman films, missing many of the key ingredients that made them so great. However is the franchise really in need of another ‘re-boot’ ? Mark Millar’s Superman work includes the interesting ‘Superman: Red Son’, a what if Superman was raised in the Soviet Union story, so he has proven that he can successfully do something very different with the iconic hero. Fellow Scotsman, Grant Morrison, has also been very successful with his re-imagining on the Man of Steel in the ‘All Star Superman’ series, so it seems that there are quite a few sources of inspiration available to DC and the filmmakers. Which direction they will take Kal-EL remains to be seen and the hopes are that they don’t stray too far.

  1. I have GOT to read this book 🙂

  2. Supermans Returns was a VERY awful movie. The guy they cast as Superman had no personality, he was like watching dust fall on a white page. Kevin Spacey was all over the place like a cartoon with no apparent focus to his personality at all (it’s as if they just put on the page ‘random wacky Nicholson ripoff’ — get big star so people will think it’s a character). It was pretty much the worst work of their careers for both Singer and Spacey — they both made all the wrong choices. Just a bad movie man. I don’t get why people find it so difficult to just say it — there is no magic power in the millions and millions of dollars they spent making it — no voodoo witch doctor who will shrink your dick if you don’t give the Big Man respect.
