Bell Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant Launch Concert featuring Metric

Wednesday August 4th:

I am running late, so I’m pushing my way through the huge crowd that has gathered on Toronto’s Front Street to see a free Metric concert sponsored by Samsung. I want to get as close to the stage as possible to cover the show, but I have no idea how I’ll be able to maneuver through the crowd to get there. Thankfully there’s a fenced off VIP area that I have press access to, so in the end I manage to get some great pictures of the show, which you can see after the jump.

In my opinion, the highlight of the spectacle (besides Metric, who were amazing) was spotting a Samsung rep holding a Galaxy S Captivate, the Rogers/AT&T version of the Galaxy S that had only been officially announced the morning of the concert. The throngs of people out to see the show were clearly not as excited about the phone as I was, and it was audibly demonstrated when the Samsung rep introducing the band was booed off the stage before he could even begin talking about Samsung’s phone. A touch ungrateful, if you ask me, given that there wouldn’t have even been a show had Samsung not sponsored it.

To celebrate the launch of their new Android smartphone (the Galaxy S Vibrant – watch our unboxing video here), both Samsung and Bell had been posting clues on Twitter, hinting at who the mystery band would be, over the course of the days leading up to the show. Because Metric ended up confirming that they’d be the star attraction at the free concert before Samsung even made the announcement official, most of the people who turned up had absolutely no idea that the whole shebang was a promotion for the phone. Their reaction, while uncalled for, was understandable and could easily be chalked up to to this day and age of anti-corporate rhetoric.

Metric played a short (yet very high-energy) set that showcased all of their biggest singles so far, and the crowd behind the fences were very quickly whipped into a frenzy. However, like in the VIP section at most PR events, there were a lot of people clearly not interested in the show. It makes me question the real value of putting on what must have been quite an expensive show for Samsung. Personally, I had a great time getting to see Metric up close. So, hats-off to Samsung for putting on a great show. With any luck, there were at least a few people in attendance who had their curiosity piqued enough to eventually head out and check out the Galaxy S Vibrant, and consider making a switch to Android.

  1. I thought it was pretty rude of the crowd as well. The guy was only up there for a minute, and Metric played for an hour. Awesome show, too! I saw them about a month earlier at the Molson Amplitheatre, which was spectacular, but they seemed to be having a lot more fun this time around.
