Flying saucer on Roswell ranch captures international imagination
It was 63 years ago today, on July 8th 1947, that the Roswell Daily Record ran the headline “RAAF Captures Flying Saucer On Ranch in Roswell Region”, which launched the most well-known UFO ‘cover up’ in modern history. Subsequently, the crash was attributed to that of a Project Mogul balloon loaded with crash test dummies and designed to detect Soviet atomic test blasts.
Of course, one has to wonder why there would be crash test dummies on what’s supposed to be a high altitude, unmanned balloon, but outside of that minor non-sequiter, there’s no doubt that the Roswell Incident became a spark for much in our popular culture. It certainly hasn’t hurt tourism for Roswell either, as Ufologists and the curious gather in the New Mexico city every July 4th long weekend to celebrate everything UFO related. Roswell and Area 51, the base where the UFO and alien bodies were allegedly taken, have left an indelible mark on our collective subconscious. It’s seeped into every form of popular media, from novels to music to video games and film, and has created the whole field of Ufology.
A full list of entertainment that has been influenced by the ‘Flying Saucer’ headline would be much longer than one would expect, and even the wikipedia page on the subject is missing many example. For that reason, whether you believe we’re not alone in the universe or otherwise, Roswell deserves a nod today.
