RED Scarlet: Film resolution for the rest of us?

2009-12-01-redscarlet

The RED ONE camera has been around for a while now, showing it’s chops as a replacement for analog film for a couple of years.  Since then, Red also annouced two new cameras, including the Scarlet which is aimed squarely at the prosumer market.

Well, the details are out thanks to the RED user forum, and although they added a little more ‘pro’ to the pricing than originally announced, the specs are pretty impressive.  The ‘all-in-one’ Scarlet fixed 8x lens and brain will be priced at $4750 (US).  This price also includes a CF memory module, 2.8 inch touch screen (with touch focus), battery and travel charger.  For DSLR enthusiasts who may already have a collection of RED, Canon or Nikon electronic lenses, the ‘brain only’ version will be $2750 (US).  This is certainly more than your typical camcorder, but you get a lot of bang for the buck.  The Scarlet will shoot 3K footage in the REDCODE Raw format at up to 120 frames per second, with a 150 fps burst mode.  It also supports the more standard 1080p and 720p at 30 fps.

For those who want to see a quick comparison of resolutions, check out this handy chart from Mammoth HD.  Although 3K isn’t represented, it sits between 2K and 4K, easily trumping 1080p.  Below is a size comparison between the RED Scarlet 8x and a Nikon D3…

    I cannot wait!! So… many…features…
I really love that the modules/accessories are now completely compatible with the EPIC as is the FLUT (Floating point Look Up Table) Colour Science for Scarlet. Will make colour correction even more exact. I also really like that they’ve put in Gigabit Ethernet to transfer stills and REDCODE footage. 🙂

Oh yeah, and 3K REDCODE recording at 120fps!!
