Episode 020 – Mobile Madness

By Doug Groves on 15 Nov 2009

After taking a hiatus, which allowed us to catch up with our Fan Expo footage, we’re back on a regular schedule.

Given the big news in the mobile phone space over the past couple of weeks, we talk about the new Bell / Telus HSPA+ network, and some of the new phones they’ve introduced (or soon will be) such as the Motorola Droid/Milestone, the HTC HD2, the end of Rogers iPhone exclusivity and much more. If you’ve been contemplating switching, or getting a new smartphone, then this is the episode for you.

I hope wind mobile does bring our rates down to earth but, no coverage in quebec, obviously for me, its a non starter… as it will be for a lot of people who do business in this country…

That’s why I wish we could get you on the show, to give us a Quebec perspective. I don’t remember the details, but was it Videotron that locked them out?

    new years podcast w00t!

    from winds website.;

“Why aren’t we talking about Quebec? We’re not in Quebec because we were beat out in the spectrum auction. Quebecor was successful in buying up nearly all of the available AWS spectrum in Quebec. They actually paid more for the Quebec spectrum than we paid for all the rest of Canada! We wanted to be there (and really still want to be there), but we can’t do that without spectrum. However, we are working on having roaming coverage in Quebec and other areas in Canada. ”

pierre peladeau is an asshat… you should see videotron’s wireless plans if you want to REALLY know what draconian is

thats right folks, for $5 you get 2 megabytes per month

its truly stunning considering how bang on the rest of their services are… then again if you look at their phone selection…

being said, outside of quebec you are roaming… who the HELL uses this service and im asking from the frigging frontlines (have never met ANYONE using videotron wireless… not surprising)

just talked to one of my sales guys who has the contract involved in videotron’s 3g network… which has been delayed because of a botched deal with nokia/siemens… apparantly videotron hasnt been focusing any energy on current data plans because of the shitstorm they are trying to get ironed out for their 3g network…

    interesting

  • crosseyed_mofo

you eggheads figure this out :D

Interesting in that final post it mentions the likelyhood of Videotron and Globalive partnering up in a similar manner to Bell / Telus.

That could be interesting, and maybe even drive down Videotron rates (as long as Wind Mobile eventually gets the go ahead). It would pretty damned funny if Videotron (the most expensive data) was partnered with Wind (potentially the least expensive data).

    Gotta love it. :)

  • crosseyed_mofo

i was scratching my head at that prospect as well

also did you read how much they charge if you exceed your 2 megabyte cap

    5 cents per K

    OI!

  • http://www.dougplanet.com Doug Groves

Yeah. Videotron is gonna have to drop its rapes… er I mean rates… if it wants to get a foothold outside of Quebec, and since Globalive has the same spectrum, it’s their only chance.

Of course, if Globalive managed to get the boot (highly unlikely), they’d need to sell off that spectrum in a fire sale…

    Hmmm…
