What went wrong with Terminator Salvation?
After seeing the movie with Doug and Dave, I couldn’t help thinking about what might have been. The movie, in my humble opinion, was not as bad as the reviews had suggested, but it certainly could have been better. In the months prior to the film’s release there were rumours leaked online about a controversial earlier draft of the script — existing prior to Christian Bale’s involvement with the film — which sounded far superior to the one that ended up on the big screen, and now chud.com has the full story:
The Terminator Salvation you saw on movie screens this weekend was not always the Terminator Salvation that was meant to be. Like in the franchise itself, history has been changed, and the original script for Terminator Salvation ended up getting gutted. You can still see the outlines of that script in the current film, but the specifics that might have made Terminator Salvation if not better at least more interesting are gone.

Everybody walks out saying ‘Why didn’t they kill Kyle Reese?’ but they were obviously using him as bait and there’s no reason to assume that they know he’s Connor father (they might know that he gets sent back in time and is important to the resistance, but that’s a different thing than knowing that killing him will instantly erase Connor — two very different tactical situations, everybody assumes they know the latter when it seems more likely that they only know the former).
But Christian Bale’s performance is a big fat fuckhole at the centre of the movie whose fatal terribleness, though I *tried*, cannot be denied.
