Sony Announces New Interchangeable Lens Camcorder

It’s not surprising that with all attention HD video-capable DSLRs have been getting, companies like Canon and Panasonic have enjoyed a surge of popularity of their HD-DSLR/HD-EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens) cameras.  Now, they’ve also announced that they are planning on stuffing those gorgeous APS-C and 4/3s sensors into their next-gen camcorders.  But they’re still much in development and won’t be in the market until 2011 at the earliest.  In the meantime, Sony has jumped into the fray and has them done one better.

Sony have just announced that they will release their brand spanking new NEX-VG10 interchangeable lens camcorder this September 2010.  That’s right, in less than 3 months.  Using the same Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and E-Mount lenses as their new Alpha NEX cameras, they will offer such features as 1920×1080 60i/50i AVC-HD recording with a bitrate of 24 Mbps, an ISO sensitivity range of 200-12800, the ability to take 14 MP stills, and of course, no recording time limits that plague the HD-capable still cameras.  It also will support MS-PRO DUO/SD/SDHC/SDXC cards, and a brand new “quad capsule spacial array stereo microphone” that incorporates four omnidirectional microphone capsules.  The $2000 price tag will include an image stabilized 18-200mm zoom lens (normally a $800 value) and a free download of the Sony Vegas Movie Studio 10 software.

The really cool thing here is that since the NEX-VG10 uses E-mount lenses, it will also be compatible with their A-mount lenses (with an adapter) so you can use Sony’s G and those beautiful Carl Zeiss lenses.  I had a chance to check out the NEX-5 and NEX-3 EVIL cameras last month, and unfortunately I was not really that impressed with the quality of their 1080i video; too much compression artifacting for my tastes, not to mention I’m not a fan of interlaced video modes.  For me, I’m hoping they’ll build in a 1080p 24fps record mode.    But it’s Sony here, so that feature will probably show up in a future, higher priced model.  But here’s hoping.
