Crowd sourced funding and distribution brings Pioneer One TV series to life
It was just yesterday at NXNEi that we were talking with Perry Chen, one of the founders of Kickstarter about how the site has really helped facilitate crowd sourcing funding for creative projects, and how it can really help independent creators off the ground. Even as we were talking to him, a Kickstarter funded TV project called Pioneer One saw the premiere of it’s pilot episode (includes .torrent link), via crowd sourced distribution network VODO.net.
Pioneer One, which is political thriller with a science fiction element as it’s jumping off point, initially put their project on Kickstarter, looking for donations to add up to $6000 to make the pilot. In the end, creators Josh Bernhard and Bracey Smith actually surpassed their goal by 25%, getting $7485 from 122 individual backers who backed it with pledges of between $5 and $100. With the pilot shot in HD no less, their ultimate goal is to become the first series that’s distributed through the VODO network of P2P sites and trackers.
VODO is coalition of some of the largest peer to peer sites to help highlight content from creators who are actively looking for distribution and promotion. On a regular basis, VODO members pick a project to highlight on the distribution network. Pioneer One marks the first time that a TV series launch has made it to their list. Let’s hope it’s just the first in a long list.
