Sony Ericsson announces Xperia X8, pushes up X10 2.1 update, and win an X10 from Rogers for Father’s Day

Today Sony Ericsson confirmed the existence of the recently leaked ‘Shakira’ mid-sized Android smartphone, when they officially introduced the Xperia X8. While Rogers has not confirmed, or even hinted, that they will carry this phone, it makes sense that they will, since they currently carry the Xperia X10, and will soon have the X10 Mini. The X8 fits in-between these two phones, in both price and size, and sports a 3 inch screen, 600 MHz CPU, 3.2 MP camera, and runs Sony Ericsson’s Timescape UI.

This phone takes the best from Xperia X10 and the mini products into a new price point that will give consumers a greater choice and attract a new audience for touch screen Android phones. The user interface is similar to that of the Xperia™ X10 mini, with the four-corners that give easy one hand use and can be customised for one touch access to your favourite applications.

Interestingly Sony has said that the X8 will “will either launch on Android 1.6 with a subsequent upgrade to Android 2.1 a few weeks later, or will launch on Android 2.1.” Speaking of 2.1, they also announced today that the highly anticipated 2.1 OS upgrade for the Xperia X10, recently named “the official mobile handset of the 2010 FIFA World Cup”, will now arrive towards the end of Q3, instead of the originally announced mid-Q4 timeframe. Along with the OS upgrade, they are also enhancing the X10 to compete with some of its more recent competitor’s, the HTC EVO, and Motorola Droid Xtreme, by adding HD video recording capabilities. In addition, in Q4, they will add some more features, one that will be, as of now, exclusive to the X10:

A further upgrade to the Xperia™ X10 in Q4 will make it possible to connect and display wirelessly content on your television [presumably Sony TVs only] and enhance the Timescape™ and Mediascape applications.

With these updates, the X10 will finally be able to join the ranks of the best Android phones on the market today. For now its current OS (1.6) is really holding it back, something that I will detail in our in-depth review, due by end of this week.

Lastly, with Father’s Day coming up this weekend, Rogers is holding a contest on their Redboard blog, where they are giving away an X10. All you have to do is leave a comment on the Redboard post:

In 100 words or less, tell us why your dad deserves an Xperia X10. Or, if you’re a father, tell us why you deserve to win the device.

You have to hurry though, since the contest closes at 12:00 noon on June 17, 2010 – today!

The full rules can be found here.

I’m curious to see if this update will actually be on time. I like my X10, but I’ve debated getting rid of it because of OS 1.6.
