Sony Ericsson confirms no multi-touch or custom ROM’s for X10

While we still haven’t completed our review of the Xperia X10, we thought we would do a service for the enquiring minds that have been speculating on whether the X10 will eventually support multi-touch. While there has been both positive and negative answers to this question posted on multiple tech sites, we feel that the response we got from Sony Ericsson is the final say on this matter –

Owing to the particular hardware and software configuration of the X10, multi-touch capabilities will not be enabled in the core platform irrespective of the software upgrade. Whilst there has been intense discussion amongst online consumers about many of the detailed features supported by the X10, Sony Ericsson has at no point made any official statement indicating support of multi touch as a core feature of the XPERIA X10.

Whilst Sony Ericsson does not generally comment on speculation about future product or feature announcements, our communication principle is to have an open and honest dialogue with consumers and we make the above clarification in order to avoid any mis-conceptions among purchasers of the XPERIA X10. We have had extremely positive consumer feedback following our first shipments of the Xperia X10 and we are very confident that this product delivers a user experience that is truly unique and will delight consumers in Canada and all over the world over.

We also asked if they would allow custom ROM’s on the X10, as long as it was understood that the owner voids their warranty if they install one, as HTC does with the Nexus One. Sadly the answer we got was not the one we were hoping to hear –

Sony Ericsson Android phones only accept ROM’s prepared by Sony Ericsson according to normal product development processes. The only personalization possible is by adding applications from Android Market or other sources of Android applications.

Expect our full review on the phone soon.
