YouTube goes widescreen, and it’s about time

Watchmen Trailer in Widescreen on YouTube

If you’ve been to YouTube since yesterday, you’ll have noticed a change to the window in which you waste some time watching Dramatic Chpmunk, Baby Panda or the Numa Numa guy: They’re all now being presented in widescreen.

The YouTube Blog explains the reason for the change:

We’re expanding the width of the page to 960 pixels to better reflect the quality of the videos you create and the screens that you use to watch them. This new, wider player is in a widescreen aspect ratio which we hope will provide you with a cleaner, more powerful viewing experience. And don’t worry, your 4:3 aspect ratio videos will play just fine in this new player.

Considering sites like Vimeo have been offering videos in not only wide-aspect but also HD, YouTube is undoubtedly late to the game. However, since it is inarguably the ubiquitous video-sharing site of choice, it’s easy to take a better-late-than-never attitude and welcome YouTube’s new format with open arms.

Now all that’s left is for YouTube to lift that silly-ass 10-minute limit and start setting up some channels for feature-length content. I for one would love to see some original feature creations released on YouTube in widescreen under Creative Commons.
