“The Dark Knight” DVD adds “please don’t download me” bonuses

Joker likes toys

According to legionsofgotham.org, the Dark Knight will be released on December 9/08 in various collectible formats.

They include a DVD version packaged with a BatMask, and an exceptionally ornate version of a BatPod bust, the base of which acts as a housing for the discs.

These special editions apply to the DVD release. There appear to be no value-added extras for the Blue Ray version.

Special packaging like this is most welcome, IMHO. If studios are going to dissuade people from simply firing up their torrent trackers every time a huge movie gets released, they need to offer an additional benefit, and packaging swag with the movie certainly goes a long way to accomplishing that goal. It’s worked countless times before; off the top of my head I can reference the Halo 3 “Master Chief Helmet” edition, the “Mightmare Before Christmas” bust, and even the “Alien vs. Predator” polystone bust edition. (Huge an Alien fan though I am, I can guarantee I never would have spend money on that piece of crap had I not gotten some shelf-sitting chachkas with it.)

Of course, there is really only one special feature I really want: Affordable Blue Ray discs. Looks like that’s something I’m going to have to keep holding my breath on, though, as a quick trip to HMV indicates that people are still willing to drop $49.95+++ on anything, so long as it’s in HD. Well done, Sony. I guess after throwing over a BILLION dollars (yeah, with a “B”) at the studios to settle the HD/Blue Ray conflict once and for all, you need to recoup your losses somehow.

There is no information regarding pricing for these special editons, but luckily, Legions of Gotham scored images of the packaging. Since they’ll likely be forced to tear it down in the near future, I’m going to post it all here, in all its eye-candy goodness.

Enjoy!
