Best Worst Movie screening tomorrow

Last year, Michael Paul Stephenson released Best Worst Movie, a documentary about the making of 1990’s Troll 2, and the cult following it’s garnered over the years. If you’re one of the (un?)fortunate souls who rented Troll 2 back in the day, you know it sits in that hallowed realm of movies so bad it’s good, and is probably best experienced with a crowd of like-minded individuals who can handle a good portion of cheese in their cinematic diet.  I’ll have to admit that I never made it all the way through Troll 2, but that probably has to do with the fact that I was watching it by myself.  I can definitely see how the Ed Wood-ian level of schlock could play in a darkened theatre.

Tomorrow should prove that point.  There’s a one night only double-bill event running across Canada from British Columbia to Newfoundland and parts in between, where you can catch both Troll 2 and Best Worst Movie on the big screen. The Toronto screening at the Scotiabank Theatre will also feature in person appearances by Michael and George Hardy, one of the stars of Troll 2, who also plays a large part in Best Worst Movie.

Michael Stephenson is not only the director of the documentary, but also appeared in Troll 2 when he was ten, and Best Worst Movie is not only about Troll 2 itself, but the journey from embarrassment, to acceptance, and even celebration that many of the people involved with the film have gone through since it was made in 1989. We were also lucky to get some time to talk to Michael, and that interview will be posted soon.
