Dance Central – One Step At a Time

While the gyms are full and too many people are jiggling around in too little clothing, I’ve become a basement gamer. A dancing basement gamer.

Dance Central has only recently become a tool for fitness in my household. It started out as the coolest novelty, a well-intentioned weight loss method, then loads of fun as a party game. So ironically, hubby and I would just be watching everyone else sweat, while we sat and haphazardly reminded ourselves to play later.

We didn’t.

18 Games Worth Playing From 2010

Whether you’re a casual gamer or consider yourself hardcore, there’s no doubt that 2010 was a busy year, regardless of your system(s) of choice.  Last week I asked the crew here at RGB Filter to send me a list with a few of their top recommendations, whether they were blockbusters or something the mainstream may have missed.  The goal wasn’t to come up with a Top Ten or pick Game Of The Year, as such awards are about as relevant to the intrinsic quality of a game as winning Best…

Kinectimals review: Virtually Cuddly

Well, it was only a matter of time before there had to be something for the ankle-biters. With games like Kinect Sports, Kinect Adventures and Dance Central being aimed at an older audience, who’s to say that preschoolers should be left out? Kinectimals is most definitely for a much younger audience. My bets are on ages six and under. The game play is fairly simple, uses a great deal of repetition, a really basic storyline, and a big focus on interacting with a virtual cub. The appeal is that these…

Kinect Review: Are games just the beginning?

A lot has been made of Microsoft’s Kinect, the new motion detection system for the Xbox 360. It has lead many to draw comparisons to the gesture controls seen in Minority Report, and go so far as to say that it may even change the face of computing in the future. That’s high praise indeed, but what does it mean for gaming right now?

Xbox Dashboard Fall Update 2010 – Netflix in Canada on the 360

The Xbox Dashboard getting a fall update is about as dependable as the leaves changing colour and pumpkins popping up at every corner store.  If you’ve already signed up for the preview program (now closed), you should have it now.  Though we Canadians don’t get all the goodness of our US brethren (no ESPN and no Zune Pass), the update does support Canadian Netflix access, and gives the user an idea where Microsoft is headed, not just with the Xbox, but with it’s interface metaphor across a wide swath of…

Kinect for Xbox 360: on display in Toronto and soon Montreal

If you’ve been hearing about Microsoft’s Kinect for the Xbox 360, but haven’t yet had a chance to see it in person, you can get an early hands on right now, as long as you’re in Toronto.  To help promote the launch of the full body interface, Microsoft has leased a storefront and filled 2 storeys with Kinectified Xbox 360s, to give the public a chance to go hands on, as it were. Covering 2 floors, there’s a variety of playable demos, including Kinect Sports from Rare, Your Shape: Fitness…

At X’10 – Microsoft Kinect

One of the highlights of X’10 was getting a chance to go “hands on” with Microsoft’s controller-free controller Kinect.  The various mini games in Kinect are actually quite the workout (see about 1 minute in the above video), and though there is lag, it didn’t seem to affect gameplay. We also got a sneak peak at the Kinect friendly version of the Xbox Dashboard, which allows you to navigate the console with either gestures or voice commands.  Both features were working spot on,  and it seems that Microsoft’s goal of…

E3 2010 – keynote round up.

Even though you may have seen live blogs of the major keynotes from E3 this year, you may have missed some of the details, or even the nuance of having something told to you second hand. Luckily most of those keynotes can still be seen online. Now you can play the Sony and Microsoft keynotes side by side and decide who looks goofier, someone using Kinect, or someone using Move. In order of appearence: Microsoft – Electronic Arts – Ubisoft Nintendo – Sony – Kinect

Xbox E3 2010 keynote highlights

Microsoft’s keynote at this year’s E3 (the Electronic Entertainment Expo, don’t you know), is probably the biggest one in the past few years, on a number of levels.  Of course, all the big titles were trotted out, including Bungie’s final installment of the Xbox franchise, Halo: Reach, which looks like it’s adding space battles.  Other big titles on display include the latest in the Gears of War and Fable franchises.  There was even some footage from Metal Gear Solid: Rising. Although the games never take a back seat at E3,…

Project Natal becomes Kinect

With E3 2010 kicking off, Microsoft has decided that the official name for Project Natal will be Kinect, according to a since-pulled article from USA Today that was published on Sunday.  Besides the name change, a number of games were announced… Kinectimals, which is a virtual pet game, with over 20 different animal. Joyride a racing game that is driven by your avatar. Kinect Sports, which includes bowling, boxing beach volleyball, track and field, table tennis and soccer, and sounds very much like a controller free Wii Sports. Kinect Adventures,…
