Apple pushes out Canadian iPad lauch, taking pre-orders May 10. Rogers announces iPad plans

ipadcanada

On Wednesday Apple announced that, due to the popularity of the iPad in the US, the planned late April international launch of their latest must have device was going to be delayed until late May. Love it or hate it, the iPad is definitely an important device, that will change how media is consumed, and it will be interesting to see what Canadian content is available at launch next month.

Although a Canadian date had not been specifically confirmed all the rumours prior to Wednesday pointed to an April 24th launch, which is when the cellular capable 3G model was (and still is) to be launched in the US.

It was never clear if the planned April launch in Canada was going to be just for the Wi-Fi model, or also the 3G model.  With the announcement of the delay to May, Apple.ca was updated with more details on the Canadian availability of the iPad – starting May 10th Apple is taking pre-orders – including confirmation that the 3G model will be launching at the same time.

On the same day, Rogers posted on their Redboard blog that they will be offering plans for the iPad 3G ‘from the end of May’, but did not divulge any more details, such as pricing or iPad exclusivity. It is also not clear if Rogers themselves will be selling the iPad, or just providing plans. From the 83+ comments on the Redboard post, it seems there is a lot of interest in the iPad, but also concerns with what Rogers could potentially charge for their plans, whether they can tether with the iPad with their iPhone, and the possibility of sharing their iPhone’s data plan.

We also contacted Bell and Telus to see if they had any information about support for the iPad, but we were met with a wall of silence. Bell said ‘We have nothing to announce today on the device’, and Telus’ response was ‘TELUS doesn’t comment on potential product or services coming or not on our network’. While it is possible that Rogers could have exclusivity on the iPad, it wouldn’t make sense for Apple to restrict the iPad to one carrier again now that the iPhone is available from all three Canadian HSPA carriers.

Hopefully the clouds of uncertainty will clear soon and more information will be available from both Apple and Rogers. Are you going to pre-order one? Let us know in the comments below.
