New Canadian Video Game Awards coming this spring

2010-03-10-gameawardsThe 1st Annual Canadian Videogame and Digital Arts Awards is set to take place May 5th at the Vancouver Convention Centre and will in essense kick off GDC Canada.  This is definitely a good thing, as with the ELANs moving from Canada to the US, there’s definitely room for an awards show that highlights Canadian talent, be it big names in the gaming industry such as Bioware or Ubisoft Montreal, or the wealth of talent behind the scenes of film and television.  A number of sponsor such as Microsoft and EA have already signed on, and the show will be presented by Reboot Communications, Greedy Productions (of ‘Electric Playground’ fame) and Seven Group.

It’s especially well timed, as over the past few years Canada has seen further investment both at the national and provincial level.  The combination of talent and investment has moved the country to become the 3rd largest games producer in the world.  Whether it’s Ontario courting Ubisoft or the The GoC creating the Canada Interactive Fund, the country appears to be on a major push into the digital economy.
