Collusion: Do you know where you are?
The image and text above tells you just about everything you need to know. It’s from the Collusion project at http://collusion.toolness.org/ . It’s a Mozilla Firefox plug-in that allows you to visualise, either on the site or in a separate tab, a history of your web surfing for that session with lines showing which websites are sharing information about your movements with other websites ( the grey dots) or with dedicated trackers (the red dots). When you first visit the site it will demonstrate this using a pre-set series of website visits; seeing as you haven’t downloaded the plug-in yet or may not be a Firefox user. The mouse interaction in the demo is all user controlled so you can pull and tug at the constellation-like patterns and drag them around the screen. They move with the bouncy grace of a Calder mobile and their retro-Modernist simplicity makes one think that you are looking at a Saul Bass title sequence for a hip-Fifties, adult comedy. I kept expecting Tony Randall or Kim Novak’s name to come crawling up or sliding on to the screen. What does show up on the screen might look like a stylised porcupine on hair gel but it is the network of your web activity and who is interested in it. Have fun, play safe and remember you’re connecting with everyone who is connected to whomever you are connected to.
