iTunes subscription maybe coming…to US. Canadians encouraged to keep stea….er, buying CDs.

Apple may be getting ready to introduce a subscription iTunes service in September..

Macrumors has posted an anonymous tip claiming that “iTunes Unlimited” may be launching in the fall.  The services include:

  • iTunes Unlimited
-256 Kbps music; highest quality digital music subscription service ever
-50% of U.S. store available for iTunes Unlimited at launch, U.S.-only launch
-Available through iTunes or retail box a la MobileMe, funds applied through iTunes gift cards cannot be used towards subscription purchase
-$129.99 stand-alone or $179.99 with MobileMe, current MobileMe subscribers can add iTunes Unlimited for $99.99
    -One-year subscription period
-Current a la carte options unchanged
-When signed in to subscription account, “Buy” is “Get”
-“Download and Play throughout iTunes Unlimited Subscription” or “Buy and Keep”
-“Buy and Keep” option available for downloaded subscription songs, purchased version replaces subscription version
    – Late October launch with iTunes 7.8

Mac Daily News and the Unofficial Apple Weblog back up the claim, although it’s possible (probable) it’s all from the same source.  Regardless, rumours, especially Apple rumours, and ESPECIALLY Apple rumours from anonymous sources, are rarely true and are often just a blogger trying to drive traffic to his site.

Hey, that’s not a bad idea.

“Apple offering 2 for 1 deal on all MacBook Airs for back-to-school.”  There, you heard it here first. 😉

All jokes aside, rumours of a subscription service on iTunes are not new…the earliest one I found was from 2004…but if this one turns out to be true, this is definitely a step in the right direction for the future of online media purchasing and sharing.

Although I have to chuckle a little bit; only Apple could get away with releasing only half its online library and calling the service “unlimited.”

Of course, it won’t affect us any time soon…the service is for US residents only, as per usual.  So don’t cancel your Columbia House subscription just yet.
