Windows Mobile 6.5 Release Date May 11th?

Windows Mobile 6.5 was announced earlier this year at Mobile World Congress. At that point in time, the expected release date was estimated to be either late summer or early fall of 2009, with the first devices to follow soon after. According to the Windows Mobile Developers blog the long awaited update the the mobile OS will be released on May 11th at Tech ED 2009. That’s a decent bump in the schedule, and means that new devices running 6.5 should be out sooner than later. Of course, for those…

After recent announcements regarding Microsoft entering the mobile app shopping fray with their Marketplace, some details are starting to come out, including: buy via phone or full web site 24 hours full refund on returns. carrier specific sub stores certified compatibility with particular devices On the developer side, Microsoft is still touting full transparency in the approval process.  Probably the best bit of news for developers is that the company is dropping application updates to the 5 app limit per $99 registration. Of course, this remains largely moot.  As of…

Microsoft’s MyPhone Beta And Windows Live

For the past few weeks, I’ve been testing the beta version of Microsoft’s Myphone service, which allows for wireless backup to the web.  Although it delivers exactly what it promises, and does work as a backup, it’s missing the boat in certain areas. The free service will back contacts, calendar, tasks, photos, music, videos and documents to the cloud, so that even if you lose your phone, you can easily recover the data by running the Myphone service on a new device.  On that account it works fine, as I…

Mobile Interface Demos

Beyond all the new phones at Mobile World Congress this year, there were some really interesting demos of technology that may change the way we interact with mobile devices in general in the future. We’ve already mentioned the graphics power of Nvidia’s long awaited Tegra platform that should appear on both Google’s Android and Windows Mobile in the not to distant future. Beyond processing power, there were some new interfaces demoed at Mobile World Congress in 2009 worth highlighting. Stantum demonstrated their new multi-touch technology, but what makes it different…

Mobile World Congress Impressions

It would be an understatement to say that the 2009 Mobile World Congress (which kicked off in Barcelona on Monday) has been the most eagerly anticipated outing yet. Some of the expected highlights included the announcement Windows Mobile 6.5, a slew of phones based on Google’s Android and a GSM version of the Palm Pre with Vodaphone, though nothing official on that one yet. Heck, if you want to get your Dick Tracy stylez on, LG has busted out their LG910 touch screen watch phone…

Quick Shot: Skyfire vs. Opera Mobile

Skyfire is a relative newcomer to the Windows Mobile browser scene. After lingering in a US only beta for what seems like over a year, the folks at skyfire.com have finally spread their wings, at least to Canada and the UK. What Skyfire promises (and delivers on) is a browser with Flash support built in, for both video and Flash animations. This is a quick speed test comparing Skyfire with the excellent Opera Mobile 9.5, with some sample in-browser Flash playback, using an HTC Touch 400MHz phone. Rendering speeds between…

HTC’s Goal of Full Spectrum Dominance?

It looks like HTC is making a big push with it’s Touch branding, as three devices have recently been announced by the Taiwanese mobile device maker to expand its line up. Beyond the HTC Touch Diamond, which we discussed in episode 9 of rgbFilter, we’ll soon be seeing the Touch HD, with a massive 3.8″ 800 x 480 WVGA screen, as well as the Touch 3G, which on paper looks to be the replacement for its Touch, adding a faster processer, and a slightly pared down verision of the 3D interface found…

Diamonds are an Apple h8tr’s best friend. (and include unlimited data)

Along with the Bell Instinct announcement yesterday, Telus officially confirmed they would be the first North American wireless provider to have the new HTC Touch Diamond, which is the latest and greatest Windows Mobile device. The CDMA model is slightly different than the GSM one that has been available for a short time in Europe in Asia – although they have ditched the faceted ‘diamond’ look of the case, the CDMA model retains the same slick user interface and features improved specs. The battery capacity has been increased (at the…

Besting the iPhone Deal In Canada

With all the negative buzz about the Rogers iPhone, mainly over Rogers overpriced data plans, people are forgetting about the other half of the Great Canadian Media Duopoly. Most of the major cellphone carriers in Canada offer cheap, sub $10 data plans of one sort or another which include 3G speeds. Of course, these plans apply to non-smartphones, leaving out Windows Mobile and Blackberrys. Anyone who’s tried the ‘mobile internet’ on a standard phone knows that you don’t need ‘unlimited’ because it’s such a horrible experience. With one exception…
