Microsoft Security Essentials: Worth The Price And Then Some

I’ll be the first to admit that I hate anti-virus software so much, I never use it, except in test cases. I’ll also admit that I would NEVER recommend anyone NOT run anti-virus on their PC. Part of the reason I don’t run it is anti-virus is that historically it’s interfered with specialized software I use at work in post-production. The other part is that I generally don’t tread on the dangerous side of the internet.

To put aside fears of being infected, I do run regular system scans with various tools to maintain system health. So far I’ve been lucky, but it can be a dangerous net out there.

Enter Microsoft’s long awaited Security Essentials, a free anti-virus download…

If you’re used to other free or paid anti-virus, you’ll know that they can often be extremely obnoxious, which is especially true of the consumer oriented ones (I won’t name names though, because that would be a long list).

The big M has actually done a great job with Security Essentials. Not only is the software easy to both install and use, Security Essentials doesn’t hog system resources like a pig chowing down on hamburgers (which is important)…

Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. It’s easy to tell if your PC is secure — when you’re green, you’re good. It’s that simple.

Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times.

Adding an anti-virus solution is a welcome feature, one that some would argue should have been around a long time ago.  What this means for Norton, McAfee and the others remains to be seen, but I’m sure they’re not liking it.

I say better late than never, and with Windows 7 just around the corner, Security Essentials is something everyone should take a look at, even if you’re using a paid solution right now.  From this point forward, I’ll be recommending it over any 3rd party option.
