Bell admits to overstating customer data usage

In a case of extremely bad timing, The Star’s Moneyville site is reporting that Bell has been overestimating the data usage of some customers and charging them with data overage fees.  This has forced Bell to take the data tracker offline for the time being.

“Please note that we have identified an issue that may cause Internet usage shown on the site to be overstated incorrect in some cases… In order to ensure we provide reliable information to all our clients, the usage tracker will be unavailable while we resolve the issue. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

In some cases, phantom data was being counted, even when the modem was disconnected from the computer.  Bell expects to have the hardware fixed very shortly, even possibly later this week.  The timing is certainly unfortunate for telco as the past couple of weeks have been quite the roller coaster ride when it comes to the usage based billing debate, even if many of the talking points about 3rd parties using ‘Bell’s networks’ just a little inaccurate.
