Hi-Rez Studios announce Tribes: Ascend for PC and 360

Anyone who’s been playing multiplayer FPS games for over a decade will probably remember with some fondness both Starseige: Tribes and its sequel Tribes 2, the latter of which was released a decade ago. The series introduced players to a number of new elements in competitive multiplayer, from vertical combat using jet packs, and large sprawling maps that could accommodate teams of up to 16 players. Hi-Rez Studios, which purchased the Tribes franchise last fall, announced at PAX East that they’ll be bringing Tribes: Ascend to the PC and Xbox 360,…

SteelSeries Xai Gaming Mouse Review

I am staring at the box of the SteelSeries Xai. It has been packed up after my review, so we can give it away to one lucky reader. Then I look back at my Microsoft Sidewinder X8 gaming mouse. A mouse that is wireless and fracking glows RED! Yet I am so tempted to deny someone the chance to enjoy the Xai mouse – I want to crack open that package and go back to it right now. I won’t of course, but that feeling shows how much of an…

The End is Nigh: Duke Nukem Forever is coming out in 2011

Woah! Duke Nukem Forever is actually coming out. In 2011. At PAX Take Two announced that Gearbox Software would be completing the game. 3D Realms, the original developer, shut down development last year when they ran out of money. More details about how Gearbox got involved and revived a game we all thought was dead can be found in this great article on Kotaku here. Seeing as DNF has been in production since 1997, I thought I’d list a couple of things in gaming and tech history that have happened…

Irrational Games reveal their latest game – Bioshock Infinite

I loved System Shock 2. Created by Irrational Games, it was one of the scariest and most immersive games ever made. It is also one of my all-time favourites, and boy did its ‘spiritual successor’, System Shock Lite…Oh sorry, Bioshock, disappoint. Today, Irrational Games announced their latest game, Bioshock Infinite. After my hopes were dashed that Ken Levine, the mind behind Irrational, wasn’t going to be working on the X-Com reboot (another of my top 10 games of all time), I was hoping that ‘Project Icarus’ was going to be…

EA officially announces Battlefield 3

Taking a page of the Halo book, EA has announced that if you pre-order the Medal of Honor Limited Edition, which is released on October 12, 2010, you’ll get an invitation to the Battlefield 3 beta. This is the first time that EA has formally confirmed that Battlefield 3 is coming, however there was no additional information about the game given. Hopefully EA will release more news about Batttlefield 3 soon — even one really cool screenshot would be good enough for me.  On Sunday, they also launched their latest…

Transformers: War for Cybertron is the Transformers video game you might actually WANT to play

Not since Hot Rod opened up the Matrix of leadership to the haunting tune of “You Got the Touch” have I been so moved by anything Transformers related. It’s not because I’m some kind of callow emotionless jerk-bot. It’s because anything transformers-related since 1986 has, um, sucked. But the Transformers: War for Cybertron game trailer looks like it wants to buck that trend. Featuring the voice of Peter Cullen and some cameo appearances by what appears to be Omega Supreme, the trailer appears to ramp up the battle scenes in…

Dark Void demo launches this week

Whether you’ve heard of Dark Void before or not, if you have a PS3 or Xbox 360, this is your lucky week.  Those who know already have the date bookmarked.  If you’re not familiar with the title, Dark Void basically a 3rd person action adventure game, mixing that old-tymey art style of Bioshock with interdimensional sci-fi monsters.  Like most 3rd person shoots, it makes use of a Gears of War cover mechanism, adding a vertical cover mechanic into the mix. Why vertical cover?  Oh, probably because your character has a…

Assassin’s Creed II: First Impressions

One of the most anticipated gaming titles of the year was finally released this week… and Assassin’s Creed 2 has a LOT of hype to live up to for some… and a LOT to apologize for to others.  In 2007, the first game was greeted with polarized impressions, best summed up by Zero Punctuations review. Despite its glaring flaws, I was a HUGE fan of the Creed and after grinding through the first level of the sequel, my impressions thus far are nothing short of smitten. I wont get into…

Left 4 Dead 2 Demo impressions

After some minor delays, the PC version of the Left 4 Dead 2 demo was finally available yesterday evening to those who’ve pre-orderd the game.  The Xbox 360 demo was also available, it’ll be another week or more before it’s available for those who haven’t pre-ordered.  I fired up a local server so Dr Squid and myself, along with a friend, could give the two map co-op experience a whirl or two.  Some of the points mentioned in here were originally made by Dr. Squid during gameplay. Right off the…
