Boxee Media Center Beta arrives Dec 7

Boxee, the social media connected media center, is having a beta reveal party on December 7, 2009.  The software has been in alpha for the past year or so, and brings a wealth of online content to the living room interface, whether you’re running Windows, Linux, Mac or Apple TV.  From the annoucement: At the event we will demo the new Beta, launch new applications from partners and start a 4-weeks early-access for users to test the Beta before we release it to the public at CES on Jan 7th….

ASRock ION 330 as Media Center

Intel’s low-powered & low cost Atom processor has been all the rage in the computer industry for quite some time now, and nobody has embraced it more than just about every Taiwanese hardware manufacturer whose name starts with an ‘A’. ASUS thrust the netbook form factor into the minds of the masses, but it was Acer who (so far) has won the small form factor war, as the number one netbook maker (the Aspire One grabbing 50% of the market). But it hasn’t stopped there. The Atom is appearing in…

Acer Aspire Easystore H340 Review

Overview: I’m sure we’ve all been faced with the dilemma of running out of hard drive space, and wondering whether it would make more sense to upgrade an internal drive, or plunk down the money for an external solution.  When contemplating getting yet another hard drive to add to my system (as dictated by the paltry 24 GB I had left free on my last drive), I realized it was time to look into some sort of network addressed storage (NAS) instead of dogpiling another drive in the computer, or…

Windows 7 RC released to public

Though it actually sneaked out the door a day early, the latest version of Microsoft Windows 7 has officially been released to the public.  Just like the earlier beta, this is the ‘Ultimate’ edition of the OS, so it comes with all the bells and whistles, including Media Center. An XP compatibility mode which will allow legacy applications to run in a virtualized XP space, concurrently with Vista & Windows 7 applications, is also available as an addon, which should help assuage some of the fears of enterprise users as…

On The Road With The Aspire One

I can’t imagine what Jack Kerouac’s classic would have been like if he had a 3G connection and a netbook. Would “On The Road” have been a hit blog, or would he have been too busy watching Youtube videos of some dope jazz beats? Anyways… A buddy of mine wanted to go on a road trip not long ago and called me to see if I wanted to tag along. I figured, what the hell. It would give me a chance to put my new Acer Aspire One to the…

Dudes, here’s your Windows 7 beta on the Mac guide. Plus, Plain Sight.

I can’t actually vouch for this tutorial (courtesy of TUAW). Maybe RebelScum or King-Pin can pop in and evaluate it, since as we discussed while cable-sorting at our recent group tidy-up of the increasingly Gigeresque floor of the podcast studio, I don’t intend to get into Windows 7 until I am forced. Hell, I would still be installing Windows 98, if XP weren’t required for the whole concept of me trying out PC games. A concept sadly, heretofore unexecuted, mostly due to lack of drive space on my Windows partition…

Acer Aspire One Netbook Review

There’s been times I thought about getting a notebook, but decided against it for a couple of reasons. Lugging around a notebook everywhere I went never appealed to me because they’re big and bulky, and the need to do some serious computing on the go never seemed to come up. I couldn’t justify the cost/benefit ratio. Then Asus came out with their EEE PC netbook, and started a trend that shows no sign of slowing down. Nowadays, Asus alone seems to have about 100 different models of netbooks, even if…

Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld talk about the future of computers. Hint: They’re delicious.

Microsoft’s new campaign is in the wild. The campaign, in which Seinfeld & Gates just sort of hang out and shoot the proverbial breeze, was created by ad agency juggernaut Crispin Porter + Bogusky. The ad takes a significantly different tack than the Mojave Experiment did, and is in fact very reminiscent of Seinfeld’s “Superman” ads for Amex. See for yourself here.
