TIFF 2010: Monsters Q&A with director Gareth Edwards and cast

Monsters, directed by Gareth Edwards, was one of my top picks for this year’s TIFF. I had heard some good things about the film – some were calling it this year’s District 9, made at a fraction of its budget. Going in, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. It turns out that aside from the fact that Monsters and District 9 both feature their aliens in a ‘real-world’ setting, the two films have almost nothing in common. In actual fact, Monsters totally surprised me — it is unlike any…

TIFF 2010: Submarine Q & A with Richard Ayoade

The Q & A session with director of Submarine, Richard Ayoade and the cast (Craig Roberts, Yasmin Paige & Sally Hawkins). Though I am only attending a handful of films at this years TIFF, Submarine was one of my must sees. Richard Ayoade (many of you might know him as Moss from the IT Crowd) brought his debut feature to Toronto, and this Q & A shows how funny he is in person. Yes I AM the guy who asked the the last question from behind my camera, and was…

The Hand Eye Society meets for the 9th time

The 9th iteration of the Hand Eye Social is only a couple of days away, and if you haven’t been to one, I’d highly recommend it.  The socials bring together the Toronto indie gaming scene and are always a blast, whether inside the venue itself, or outside taking a breather and talking with others (it CAN get noisy inside – people are gaming after all). All the details are below, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that you really should visit iteration games now, and check out…

Bell Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant Launch Concert featuring Metric

Wednesday August 4th: I am running late, so I’m pushing my way through the huge crowd that has gathered on Toronto’s Front Street to see a free Metric concert sponsored by Samsung. I want to get as close to the stage as possible to cover the show, but I have no idea how I’ll be able to maneuver through the crowd to get there. Thankfully there’s a fenced off VIP area that I have press access to, so in the end I manage to get some great pictures of the…

The Hand Eye Society wants your game on a cabinet

With the success of TOJam, and of the Hand Eye Society’s Torontron arcade cabinet chalk full of indie games from local developers, it’s only a small surprise that they’re making more cabinets, and they’ve put out a call for more games to fill them up.  More specifically, there will be 3 cabinets with different control schemes, and they want to highlight some of the best of the Toronto indie scene in high traffic areas like the TIFF Bell Lightbox and the offices of the OMDC. The cabinets in question will…

iPhone 4 Toronto launch report with video and pictures

RGB Filter was at the Toronto launch of the iPhone 4 on Friday, July 30th. However not being a die-hard Apple fanatic I wasn’t lining up for the phone myself, so I slept in and missed the 7 AM early opening at the Apple Store. When I got to the Eaton Centre, at about 7.30 AM, there was a short line outside the Bell store, waiting for that store’s 10 AM opening, a pretty long line outside Fido, and a few people outside the Rogers store. Most amusing to me…

I have a Double Rainbow moment with a Galaxy S phone and a Porsche 911 GT3 RS

UPDATE – The video above is in HD. My initial post of this had the incorrect SD feed. WOW! OMG Double Rainbow, a Porsche 911 GT3 RS parked near my office, shot in HD, with the Bell Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant super-phone. The footage above is raw unedited video from the Galaxy S, which is pretty good quality for a phone. You can also download the ORIGINAL HD 3gp clip here ~ 80MB, so you can see EXACTLY how the video looks direct from the phone. You can probably tell…

Bell Galaxy S launches tomorrow with event at Yonge and Eglinton

The new Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant super-phone launches tomorrow on Bell. After last nights amazing Metric street concert, put on by Samsung in Toronto to promote the phone, the interest in this Android phone is very high. Bell has released the pricing details, and will it will be $149.95 on a 3-year term, $499.95 no contract, which are very good prices for such a powerful phone. With it’s super AMOLED 4″ screen, fast processor, and 16GB of storage, it compares very favorably to the iPhone 4, but is much better…

Three free games, and more, for Playstation Plus subscribers

During E3 2010, Sony announced Playstation Plus, their paid subscription model to match Xbox LIVE.  Since one can already game online for free with PSN, there seemed to be little incentive to pony up the $50 US/year for Playstation Plus, which added the capability to cross game chat, and the promise of exclusive and free content.  It looks like Sony has stepped up to the plate on the latter, and is delivering some solid free content to Plus members, including Critter Crunch, from Toronto based Capybara Games. There’s a whole…
