Puddle game review

Back in 2010, six French students won the GDC Student Showcase award for the liquid physics puzzle game Puddle.  Konami later picked up the title, and after development by Neko Entertainment, Puddle was released on both the Xbox Live Arcade and PSN a couple of weeks back. The premise of the game is straight forward.  The player guides liquids through hazardous environments, while trying not to lose so much volume that you have to start over.  In the early levels, this means navigating water through pipes filled with fire and heated…

Playstation Network still down, personal information ‘compromised’

Last Wednesday Sony took both the Playstation Network and Qriocity offline after an external intrusion, taking them a couple of day sto communicate this with the public. It’s now the following Tuesday, bringing the outage to day six, with little official word until now. In an update to the Playstation Blog, Sony has confirmed that there has been a “compromise of personal information”.

Killzone 3 review: Another Take

The instant I triggered Killzone 3’s ending cinematic I literally said “Thank ****ing GAWD” out loud. Killzone 3 is like an abusive loved one with deep-seeded issues. There are those moments where you’re having fun with them, moments where you feel sorry for them, and then moments where they make you so angry that you just want to hit them over the head with a baseball bat.

Killzone 3: The Glorious Fruits of Our Land

The standard review approach for Killzone 2, Guerilla Games’ showcase PS3-exclusive first-person shooter, focused on judging its merits in comparison to landmark Xbox 360 shooters like Call of Duty and Halo. The latter comparison was especially enticing—clash of the console-exclusive titans! Take that approach to its logical conclusion and you end up with the majority opinion about the game: graphically impressive and plenty of fun, but occasionally marred by poor design decisions…

Bulletstorm review – FPS meets arcade fun

Bulletstorm is a breath of fresh air for FPS games. The Duty Calls parody ad, complete with in-game cries of “boring” was a statement on the state of modern shooters, as if each were as serious a look at war as Platoon, Band of Brothers or Generation Kill. Of course, this Tom Clancyesque style of fiction has as much in common with reality as Plan B’s magical super subs, but that’s another story. Eschewing the gritty ‘realism’ of modern shooters for over the top science fiction is only the beginning,…

LittleBigPlanet 2 review: It’s a whole lotta fun

Well, here I am, finally writing the review of LittleBigPlanet 2. And the delay in my writing is actually attributed to having so much fun in playing the game, that there just aren’t enough hours in the day. ANYWAY, I have to admit that I wasn’t as jazzed about what I saw at the media launch party on the tester screens. I played a top-down view rodent racing derby type level and then got physically stuck before passing the controller to someone else. Oh … but then to have the…

Gran Turismo 5: Driving Force

Spoiler warning: Some cars in Gran Turismo 5 may come fitted with spoilers. You can also fit spoilers to pretty much any car in the Maintenance section. I’ve played every major version of Gran Turismo to date, including Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and Gran Turismo for PSP (but not for very long). Every time, it’s roughly the same story: I enter GT Mode, start completing license tests, buy my first car, and slowly work my way up to the pro leagues until finally, somewhere before I’ve completed every race series,…

Pac-Man Championship Edition DX review

Wow. I don’t believe I’ve ever started off a review with that word, but that simple three-letter word describes Pac-Man Championship Edition DX quite well. Continuing on the success of the original Pac-Man Championship Edition – only released on the 360 – this latest version of the classic franchise can be found on both the 360’s Xbox Live Arcade and PS3’s Playstation Network Store. And what an incredible $10 game it is. Taking the classic Pac-Man game play and bringing it into the current generation, making it relevant in today’s…

Three free games, and more, for Playstation Plus subscribers

During E3 2010, Sony announced Playstation Plus, their paid subscription model to match Xbox LIVE.  Since one can already game online for free with PSN, there seemed to be little incentive to pony up the $50 US/year for Playstation Plus, which added the capability to cross game chat, and the promise of exclusive and free content.  It looks like Sony has stepped up to the plate on the latter, and is delivering some solid free content to Plus members, including Critter Crunch, from Toronto based Capybara Games. There’s a whole…

PS3 E3 2010 keynote highlights

The Sony keynote at E3 2010 stood in stark contrast to Microsoft’s and in some ways it’s like a mirror universe version.  Which console wore the goatee this year is entirely dependent upon your fanboy predilections.  Why is that?  In the past, Microsoft more than Sony caught a lot of heat for paying for exclusive content on cross-platform titles, though that’s their prerogative. This year was Sony’s time to shine with additional content from titles like Medal of Honor, Dead Space 2 (including compatibility with the Move – more on…

PS3 outage a leap year bug?

Late yesterday, reports started appearing across the social networks and message boards of PS3 owners losing trophy information and the console being unable to play game discs. At first it was suspected that this was due to an outage of the Playstation Network (PSN). Most users reported getting the 8001050F error code, and even booting up without a network connection doesn’t alleviate the problem. As more info has leaked out, it appears the problem is limited to the older ‘phat’ PS3 models, as PS3 Slim users haven’t noticed the same…
