4th dimension surfing as video art

I actually came across the above video via Boing Boing a couple of days ago, but just haven’t stopped watching it, so that’s why it’s getting posted on a Sunday morning.  In the video, Don Whitaker has taken footage of the Oregon coast, and by putting it through a Processing script that re-creates the slitscan technique for the digital age, creates a haunting and sometimes eerie landscape that appears to be at point plucked straight out of one’s subconsciousness.

Slitscan imaging techniques are used to create static images of time-based phenomena. In traditional film photography, slit scan images are created by exposing film as it slides past a slit-shaped aperture. In the digital realm, thin slices are extracted from a sequence of video frames, and concatenated into a new image. [from flong]

Or, as Don Whitaker says in his post about his video…

I like to think that this is what you might see if you looked at our world from a spot in the fourth dimension. (^_^)

I couldn’t agree more.  The above link to flong will also suck up a lot of your time, if you start poking around at some of the other projects using this technique.  As an added bonus, Whitaker also has a collection of free HD stock footage available at his site Mother Nature Videos, all under a Creative Commons license.
