Facebook Bows To Canadian Privacy Commish
Just over a month ago, we talked about Canadian Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart’s ruling that the ubiquitous Facebook was indeed violating Canadian privacy laws, including making personal information available to 3rd party Facebook application developers.
Well, during a press conference today, Ms. Stoddart has announced that Facebook has indeed agreed to all the changes…
“This is an extremely important change,” said Ms. Stoddart.
“I would like to thank Facebook for its co-operation throughout this investigation.”
Facebook will provide new notifications for users, additions to its privacy policy, and technical changes in response to concerns flagged by the privacy commissioner.
“We’re satisfied that, with these changes, Facebook is on the way to meeting the requirements of Canada’s privacy law,” Ms. Stoddart said. [from The G&M]
This is good news all around. When all the changes are implemented, I might even consider using some of the more dodgy Facebook apps that are designed to do nothing but waste my time in a less productive manner than my Xbox 360.
“Facebook expects to have the changes in place within a year. The privacy commissioner has agreed the timeframe is reasonable, as the changes concerning third-party applications will require substantial technological changes on the part of both Facebook and the developers. The changes will affect both existing and new applications.”
