Fan Expo adds fourth day and moves back south

Although widely known to be the last weekend in August, Hobbystar has announced the dates for Fan Expo 2011.  This year the show will run from Thursday August 25 to Sunday August 28th.  After the sardine crush of 2010, the convention is not only moving back to the more spacious South Building, they’re taking over the whole South Building, which gives them over 400,000 square feet of geeky goodness.  They’ve also extended the convention to include Thursday which should alleviate some of 2010’s problems.

Anyone who attended Fan Expo 2010 knows what a cluster it was when it came to crowd control.  Due to a scheduling conflict with a medical convention, Canada’s largest fan showcase had to move from the more spacious South Building to the smaller but brighter North Building.  With yet another year of record breaking attendance, this caused the fire marshal to lock down the building, preventing many convention goers from getting back in for hours.

While the move back to the South Building was expected and needed, even that may not be enough capacity for what has become the third largest fandom convention in North America.  Let’s hope that extending the convention to include Thursday can make up the difference.  If Fan Expo keeps growing at the rate it has, it’s possible that they may end up needing the whole Convention Centre in a few short years.
